Building a house with 3" EXTERIOR insulation AND 2x6 walls!

Ahh yes, makes sense. I could see that in Florida where the goal is to keep it cool. I am up in the 41st parallel where if it gets too cold ya freeze your knickers off. The way I see it is that when you put a coat on, you don't stick the coat between your ribs, you wrap it around them. Just...

masscity - "In the winter if the sun was shining and it was around 25/30 degrees I could shut the heat off and the house would stay warm. Forgot to mention this was in the Detroit suburbs. I was on a acre and I loved this house." YES!! This is what I'm after. I'm 45 minutes from Detroit, so...

    Pole Barn Addition

I am considering Hardie board for my house build. When you say that you never have to paint again, is that in general, or are you expressing this because the hardie is covered by the trim? It seems like anything that accepts paint will need to be re-painted at some point. But then again, I...

Galvanized bolts? Need 36 carriage bolts, washers and nuts

Yes sir! "Hot-dipped galvanized steel has a thicker zinc coating for better corrosion resistance, making it suitable for outdoor use. Because of the thick plating, only galvanized nuts and washers will fit galvanized bolts. The coating typically has a rough, dull grey finish." Check out...

Galvanized bolts? Need 36 carriage bolts, washers and nuts

Im not really sure what the premium is over the other types of hardware but I did attach the price I paid yesterday. Like you, I also appreciate hot-dipped. I went into this knowing that I wanted hot dipped so I never considered any other types of bolts. Great minds think alike.

Galvanized bolts? Need 36 carriage bolts, washers and nuts

I'm rebuilding a picnic table. Does it make sense to source bolts, washers and nuts online? If so, does anyone have a good go-to source for low cost galvanized bolts and such? Maybe it's just as pricey to hit a local big box store? So far, boltdepot.com seems like the deal

What did you do on or to your LS Tractor today?

I had the neighbor kid come over and use a pry to assist the lift. Once it lifted it would hold it. Later when I had it moved I was able to lift it, RPMs way up and it moved about 3 inches a minute!

    Calculating energy usage for appliances

Get yourself a kill-a-watt meter or knock off. Not only will it measure amperage and wattage used, but you can track kWh too for under 30 bucks. If it’s 220v you can install a Sense unit or something similar but it’s more expensive. for the curious, would you mind posting a photo of your...

What did you do on or to your LS Tractor today?

Used pallete forks and moved a 4x6 concrete pad that’s about 3-4 inches thick. I only have a my225e but I thought it would do a bit less grunting. She barely picked it up. On the other hand, the weight was extending Kind of far out in front. Had to crawl to keep the rear tires on the ground.

Excellent! I already have my DIY barn up but I didn’t build it myself. I wish I would have left a header exposed on the gable end like you did. I’ll need to take the metal down and cut down to find purchase. what did you cut your metal with? I’m told cutoff wheels will destroy the finish...

Going to build a southern oriented house

Good info. It looks like you're around 35° latitude so the sun will be higher at your location. I'm around 45° here so I'll need some longer overhangs. I'm starting with 18". Since I'm pointing to the south I should get lots of nice warm sun rays penetrating the house, but I still worry...

Going to build a southern oriented house

Yes sir, all windows are around u.16 except the glazing on the south which have a u value of u.18 and SHGC of around .45 if I recall.
