It's not normally a big deal, it's a fine balance between throttle setting and adhesion on those engines. Plus, a little moisture on the rails from the cylinder drains on the front engine can be just enough to get some slippage. Now, setting in one spot and spinning the drivers will flat spot...

Got rid of the wheel bolts.

If the manufacturers of the tractors had made the axle ends with a protrusion that would pilot the wheel properly, the bolts wouldn't be such a pain to deal with. But that would probably cost another dollar in material and machining. Same for one bolt versus a stud and nut.
  117. BravoXray

Got rid of the wheel bolts.

The first time I tried the link to those studs, it didn't work for some reason, and I wrote my reply based on the supposition that they were normal type studs that are pressed in. Later I tried the link again, and saw that they were fully threaded studs that would install from the back side of...

Got rid of the wheel bolts.

In the picture of the front wheels, the studs only protrude about an eighth of an inch beyond the nuts, but the rear studs protrude about 3/8" of an inch or so. I really don't get the tractor into mud, nor does it set outside when not being used, so rust is really not a concern. Also, the studs and nuts are cad plated, and I used anti-seize on them when I installed the nuts, which will protect the threads from rusting. Yes, the BX has a strange mix of...

Because that's what I had in my toolbox. Didn't feel like spending another $20 on a bottle of red that I would probably never use again. I mowed three acres with it today, neither of the wheels fell off, and after I finished up, I rechecked the nuts, the torque was still right at 70 ft lbs.

Yes, it's grade 5. Grade 8 would have been overkill and three time the cost. I have no idea how they could back out, between the Lock-Tite and the thousands of pounds of clamping force provided, I see no more possibility of them backing out than that of the original bolts backing out. Ain't...
