    Interesting. The earlier 1723 & 1725 (and probably all earlier GC's) have 18x8.50-10 & 26x12.0-12 tires. What's on the rear of the new ones? BTW, all this ratio stuff is only really important if using 4-wheel drive, although I suppose it could have a minor effect if using a mid-mount mower.

    Yes! Fergie just hit 500.0 hours! I bought her 10/31/2023, and on 10/31/2024 she had a whopping 421.0 hours! This year has been slower so far as I had her taken apart for many "winter modifications", and then was delayed by shoulder surgery (me, not her), weather, laziness, etc.

    Duh. This is right, but this is wrong, and you shouldn't operate it that way! You should always engage either the mid or rear PTO gear first and then the PTO clutch. I'm sure you are doing this. So, the correct answer is that the gears are not always turning.

    I have an idea if @rScotty's fix #2 doesn't work. Almost certainly the cap on that spool is a soft alloy, not steel. If so, over time, the balls could easily have worn away the "sharp edge" on the detent groove. Perhaps all you need is a new cap.

    I'd suggest that you disconnect both the spring and the cable and try the tractor with the lever in both engaged (forward I think) and disengaged position. If that makes no difference, perhaps something is busted inside like the shift fork. :(
