Sleep apnea, CPAPs and other sleep health solutions.

When I saw this thread, it caught my attention immediately. I have been on CPAP since 2011 and firmly believe it saved my life. I was having every sort medical problem imaginable. My blood pressure was out of control, I was having dizzy spells and even almost passed out at work, was taken to...

AC5050 will only start with ether, please advise- we need this thing to run.

Spent my career working in the Heavy Truck manufacturing business. I worked for a long time in a factory that built class 8 trucks. Back in the day before the intense vertical integration, we installed several brands of engines in the trucks. Detroit Diesel, Catapillar, Cummins etc. One of...

    Customer Service no longer exists

I really can't stand poor customer service. Before I retired I worked for many years training and coaching employees and management teams. Customer focus was always key. When I experience some of the processes companies have today, I just shake my head. Here are a couple of paragraphs from a...

Tell us something we don’t know.

I remember when I had to gap the points in a distributor, if I didn't have a gauge handy, the rule of thumb was the thickness of a matchbook cover was about right. That was what I would use as a feeler gauge. Everyone had ready access to a matchbook then. I too still have a lot of my old...

    MX5400 breakout/lift strength?

I have a MX5400 HST open platform with about 20 hours on it. I am hesitant to comment because I haven't done much with the loader yet. I've been mostly chipping and running the grapple. However, in the couple of times I have used the loader, I had the same impression. I felt like the bucket...

Owner Dissatisfied With Deere Wants To Switch To Kubota

I am transitioning to a Kubota from a Deere also. I am still trying to adjust to the treadle. I personally found that if I use my toe to pull up on the front of the pedal, instead of trying to push down on the back of it, it works better for me. I find most of your comments on the Kubota to...

    Electrical troubleshooting question

It is highly unlikely that a wire will be open without something damaging it. I would be absolutely sure there is not a problem at either end first, either at the receptacle or the breaker. Once I had a dead outlet. I had previously worked on my main panel a couple of weeks before. I checked...

    Ring Gap

Don't know that one specifically, but a general rule of thumb for ring gaps is .004 to .005 per inch of bore . So a 3.42 inch bore would yield a top ring gap of .0137 to .0171. With gas engines this gap is increased somewhat for more high performance engines. Also the second ring is usually...

    Tractor Shortages

Interesting post. I worked for a major global heavy truck manufacturer for 40 years. Many of those years I worked in the function that taught and trained people all over the world in the "Lean" manufacturing techniques. It is generally one of the least understood methodologies I can think of...

Gotta build some shelves. Gas weld or braze? (for the practice)

I learned to weld by pushing puddles with an oxy/acet torch. It was all I had at the time. That experience served me well when I later moved to stick, then MIG and TIG. Just like DL Meisen in the post above, wire coat hangers was my filler rod of choice. I still actually have a bottle cart...

Making switch from Green to Orange

OK all you other Kubota HST owners, here is a question for you. I have had this MX5400 just a short time and it is my first Kubota. Today I was picking up some debris out of the yard and putting in the loader to take to my burn pile in the field below the house. I was stopped on a fairly steep...

Making switch from Green to Orange

It definitely varies from one machine to the next. I was used to the fender mounted lever on my old one. It didn't use cables though, as the valve was right underneath it and it was directly connected. I am getting more used to the location I have now, and of course they all have pluses and...

Making switch from Green to Orange

The biggest reason for the PTO horsepower is that I run a wood chipper. My old tractor was about 30 at the PTO and was a little challenged for that. If I had found a great deal I could have lived with less than 40, but I had set that spec as a guideline when I did my search. I am also the...

Making switch from Green to Orange

Made the first mods to the new machine today. I welded on some chain hooks on top of the bucket. I also drilled a hole in the leading edge. I did this on my old machine so I could stick a hitch ball in there. It is really hand for moving trailers around on the property. While I was at it I...

    4200 JD

Do you get any smoke when it dies out at low throttle? If it is starting good, then it is probably not compression related. If it was fuel starvation, it probably wouldn't run well at high throttle but not low. I am thinking perhaps bad injectors, or some fuel contamination. How many hours...

JD 4300 quits when going uphill.

The thermister would definitely not be the problem. The only purpose it serves is to give the fuel solenoid an extra boost when the key is turned on to make sure it engages. Once the tractor starts it plays no role. Since you have a mechanical injection system, once it is running the...

    Newbie looking for critique

I suggest you keep a record of settings. As etpm said above change one thing at a time. Write down the type of material, weld, thickness, settings and result. When you make a change record that as well. Over time as you figure it out you will be able to get to a proper setting quickly, but...

Making switch from Green to Orange

Time for an update. I took delivery of the MX5400 HST on Monday. It has been raining for two days, but I finally went out and fooled with it just a little this morning. Here are a few first impressions. Overall I really like the machine. I wanted something simple and straightforward, (at...

    Newbie looking for critique

It is a little hard to evaluate your welds when they are not cleaned up. If you chip the slag off them and hit them with a wire brush on a grinder you can get a better idea of what they really look like. One thing I haven't seen discussed previously is some basic info about the welding...

Tachometer Quit working JD 4400 tractor

I have a 1999 4400 that I replaced the instrument cluster in with an aftermarket unit. The tach wouldn't work. After a while I found out that when the screws were tightened in the back to mount the cluster into the dash it pressed the cluster into the glass cover in front. So basically the...

    Picking a first tractor

Front end loader is like a pickup truck. Once you have had one, you can't image life without it. A lot of good advice here already. I would suggest to buy a tractor with FEL. Adding one later can be a pain depending on the machine you buy. If you have a CAT 1 three point hitch, with 540 PTO...

    Empty Lot / Full Lot

I've seen the same thing while shopping. It seems to me the big mega-dealers seem to get preference. When I was looking a JD a couple of the huge outfits had some stock, but the smaller local guys not so much. Same way with Massey. The big upper midwest dealers had stock, but nothing around...

Making switch from Green to Orange

After a long search for a new tractor, I am finally taking delivery of a Kubota MX5400. I currently own a JD 4400 HST that I bought new all the way back in 2000. It has been a great machine and never let me down. I retired and have a list of projects and wanted a backhoe and grapple. By the...

    E OR M Massey?

I have been looking at MF's lately too. The M is a premium version. The E is the "economy version." For one thing the M's have the joystick for the loader built into the tractor fender and is not mounted as part of the loader. If you are getting a hydro, the M has the two separate fwd/rev...

    Compact Tractor Help

One thing to keep and eye on these days is PTO horsepower. It seems like now days the difference between engine horsepower and pto horsepower is greater than it used to be. For example, I was shopping some MF machines and one of them I looked at had 48.8 engine horsepower, but only 36.2 at the...

    Dealer communication

Yeah, it is pretty bad these days. What amazes me is that the questions I had weren't difficult. They were essentially, "Can you get me one and what would the pricing be?" If they can't or won't respond to that, you have to really wonder what is going on. I guess you have to figure no...

    Dealer communication

Yeah, you're probably right. I can tell you though, I worked my entire career for a heavy equipment manufacturer in the transportation industry. If we had people who would just blow off or ignore a customer who was genuinely interested in buying product, that would have bordered on an on the...

    Dealer communication

I have been shopping for a new tractor for a while. I am looking to trade my current machine in on a new one. However, I am really disappointed in the dealers. I have visited a couple of different dealers, one green, and one red and had the same issues. When I walk in the dealership and find...

Massey Ferguson 2860M vs JD 4066R

Thanks for the reply. I have an older JD series 4 now that has been a good machine. It is getting a lot of years on it and I was looking for a replacement. I like the JD's but to be honest the dealer I have visited here isn't very responsive. They won't return phones calls or even answer...

Thanks for the offer. How do you like it? Did you do a lot of comparison when you decided on the MF? Have you had any particular problems or surprises? This is the type of feedback I am looking for. As I said in my original post, the information I have on it now is just the promotional...

Massey Ferguson 2860M vs JD 4066R

I've been considering trading for a new machine and have been looking at the MF 2860M and the JD 4066R. I need an open station Hydro machine. I can't find much info on the MF 2860M, other than the brochures and web info, as they are a relatively new model. I see very few reviews or feedback...

    Welding brackets on tractor frame

I worked for years in the heavy truck industry. We never welded on a frame because they were heat treated, and the welding process could potentially set you up for a stress crack in the frame. Don't know if your frame is heat treated or not, but I would bolt on if possible.

Loader drifts down when starting up

Have a John Deere 4400 tractor with 430 FEL. Boom got to where it would only move very slowly up, and not at all unless I had the RPM's up pretty high. Everything else on the loader seemed to be fine. I had a small leak in the hose feeding the boom. I replaced that thinking it might help...

    3-Point Hitch  fix for 4400 3PH

I was having problem with 3PH on my 4400. It would bog the engine when in the full up position. It was difficult to position anywhere but full up or down. I found that the roll pin on the feedback arm that runs between the hydraulic control valve and the left side lift arm had sheared. On...
