Well, the tractor has been fixed by the local dealership. The source of the problem was a bad coil. Yes, I had replaced the coil early in the process with this new coil:
The problem, as was explained by the mechanic, is that this is an alleged 6V coil which requires an "external resistor"...
One more question:
When the manual suggests "pulling the vacuum line to the distributor" to test the timing, I assume they mean this metal hose (indicated by orange rectangle in picture below), correct?
1965 Ford 3 cyl gasser. Problem began a few weeks ago. Runs well with load on drawbar (soil conditioner), but with any load on the PTO (hay rake, hay tedder, bush hog (60 inch), I lose power and the engine begins to burble and run very rough. RPMs drop and if I don't depress the clutch to...
Ask and ye shall receive.

Note two items:
1. The frame is not yet painted. Impossible to do during a Michigan winter when the tractor is being used regularly. I will peck away at it this summer.
2. This is Tisco's version of the old Ford "Empire" blue. To my...
Yesterday, I noticed the left rear rim of my 8N was stained with oil in a pattern which indicated (to me) that differential oil was leaking out of the hub area and has been for some time. I have enclosed two photos. One of the leak evidence and a second of the "hub". What is the source of this...
The base coat is still curing. It is a Tisco gloss industrial enamel.
While I wait, I wonder if it is advisable to wet sand it with 2000-3000 grit prior to the clear coat application?
In the past, I have used lacquer paints and have always done so. Your thoughts?
Ford 2000-3-cylinder
Once the sheet metal, tires and fenders are off how should I go about preparing the frame for painting? The tractor paint is intact but oxidized with lots of grease and dirt and very little rust. My interest is just in refreshing the paint at this time, not a "frame off"...
1964 Ford 2000-3 cylinder
Sheet metal has been base coated with Tisco's Industrial enamel in Empire blue. Two coats with a HVLP gun. I have new decals for the rear hood and wonder if it is most advisable to place them on top of the clear coat like a bumper sticker on a car or to place them on...

As above.
Tractor is used daily to pull a PTO-driven manure spreader. The tranny/diffy fluid was changed about 200-250 hours/2 years ago with Soundguy-approved TSC UTF. The UTF fluid is at the correct level at the dipstick on the diffy and appears to be without water in it. Tractor has been...
I am attempting to remove the rear hood to paint it and have every step completed except I am unable to remove the throttle control lever from it's connections. Here is the rear hood with the throttle control lever sticking up with it's right angle bend:
Next are two close ups of the bottom of...
After looking the tractor over, hiding in plain sight behind the seat was this 7-pin Pollak brand receptacle:
This should do. Now I just need to find a 7-pin female plug to wire the control panel to.
There are plenty of 7-pin adapters out there, just not the unwired plug.
I have just purchased a moisture tester (Agratronix BHT-2) for my hay operations this year. The unit contains two sensors mounted in the hay chamber of my baler and a powered control panel which will be mounted near the Operator's station of my John Deere 5065M.
I will have no trouble mounting...
Here is a picture of the weep hole from the old pump. Is this incriminating enough? Is the stain from the coolant typical or is this an indicator of the failed shaft seal?

Update:
Picture one is after removal of the bolts connecting the water pump from the block. A stream of coolant will flow:
Next picture is after removal of the pump and before the block gasket has been removed. The tears in the gasket are artifactural incurred during the removal process...
Thanks for the advice. I pulled the hood, grill guard and the cowl last night thinking that that would help me visualize the leak, but to no avail. The radiator, fan and shroud still obscure the front of the water pump, so they will need to be removed for a final "look see". What I have...
As stated above. Radiator and hoses are new (summer 2014). The coolant leak started slowly a few weeks ago, occurs at rest and has gotten more noticeable over time. Just a few drops a day. It appears to be coming from the water pump and (although I haven't yet removed the grille and radiator...
Here is a satellite image which may help explain the situation better. This satellite image was obtained in the fall of 2012. It was approximately 3 months after we had taken possession of the property and it shows the extent of the manure and pine shavings spread on the segments of the field in...
I am at a crossroads and in need of advice. I raise hay for our horses on my own property. This is our third hay season. One segment of my hay field, which encompasses about 40% of the entire field, is very under-productive. The grasses present are sparse, slow growing and the yield is next to...

My baler's (NH 565) operator's manual and the package containing the twine are surprisingly silent on the issue.
The previous owner (of the baler) used a knot identical to the knot tied by the knotters on the baler and my neighbor suggests that based upon his experience a square knot with the...
There was an interesting thread earlier about posting pictures of your Hay wagons, so I thought it would would be entertaining to see pictures, videos and accompanying stories about the tractors, haybines, discbines, mocos, square balers, round balers, in-line balers, hay pick up vehicles of all...
Here are some pictures of the hay today. Does this look ready to cut?
Let's hope not because my farmer with the Haybine will not be here for at least a week, weather permitting.
This will be my second full season haying. Last year I contracted with a local farmer for cutting and, therefore, learned little about the correct time to cut hay as it was strictly dependent upon the weather and his schedule and availability. I realize that I really don't know the answer to...
I want to overhaul the carburetor, but don't know how to tell which overhaul kit to purchase. I have a 1951 Ford 8N. From what I can read, the original carburetor was typically a Marvel-Schebler brand. I don't know if my carburetor is original or not. There also appears to be several different...
I was able to successfully remove the starter. Had to remove the oil filter canister in the process, but it came out. I have not had time to clean it or to test it, but here are some pictures of the starter, the drive gear assembly and the ring gear. Do there appear to be any problems?
As noted in the title. The problem began 5 days ago with an occasional high pitched whine prior to the Starter properly engaging the flywheel and cranking the engine to life. Over the past few days this has become increasingly more frequent and now is present almost 100% of the time. I attempted...
Well, I attempted to get a wrench on the bolt which fixes the pulley to the crank snout and the frame is too tightly positioned in front to do so. I was able to squeeze my iPhone in close enough for a few shots.
The bolt appears to accept a hand crank, but the curved edges are large enough...
our 1951 8N is beginning to make a "clicking" sound in the front right side of the engine. I wondered if this was due to a "stuck lifter" and in the process of investigating it, came across a significant wiggle in the crankshaft pulley as it was revolving.
Here is a video of the pulley you can...
New to me is my 2012 5065M. I just had it delivered from the sales broker 3 weeks ago. It operated well until today when I attempted to start in unseasonably cold temperatures (-13F). The tractor is stored in and enclosed and unheated shelter. The are currently no sources of heat for the block...
As we are about to have temperatures of 10 to 20 below zero the next two days a thought occurred to me..If my 8N has the original 6V positive ground electrical system, how would I go about using my Schumaker 4020S Battery Charger/Engine Starter to:
1. Charge my battery?
2. Start my engine in...
Update:
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. After some consideration, I elected to purchase a steel tank, pictured below, off of Craigslist. The former owner allowed me to climb on top and lower my LED flash light into the fill hole and inspect the tank. There was almost no rust. The...
I am in need of a 300 gallon fuel storage tank for diesel fuel on my property. I will be looking at a tank listed on Craigslist in the next couple of days. This tank held gasoline, but has been empty for 6-9 months. It is a gravity feed tank with a screw on filter system raised on a steel cradle...
I am new to farming and relatively new to owning a 30 acre horse farm. I am currently raising 8-9 acres of mix and grass hay. Our first two seasons, I cut my teeth by hiring and observing (working) for neighbors who cut/conditioned and subsequently baled my hay. I learned much, but realized...
My neighbor pitched in to help us finish our final cutting this year when our baler broke down. He has a New Holland 565 which is approx. 12 years-old and immaculately cared for. He had not used the baler for 5 or 6 years as he has slowly gotten away from the hay business. The baler had sisal...
I am new to farming my 8 acre hay field which I use to supply forage for our horse farm. I recently purchased a New Holland 255 Rake/Tedder on consignment from my local CNH dealer. During the initial shakedown run, operating at about 350 RPM on the PTO one of the twelve arms which holds the...
Here is the setup for the full field test. FLD lead is disconnected and a ground jumper is connected to the field post:
At idle the ammeter shows a slight positive current:
With increased RPM:
However, once I reconnect the FLD wire to the gennie and reconnected the battery, the ammeter...
Here are the pictures of the Vreg:
The first picture shows the terminals marked BAT ARM FLD going from left to right and on the reverse side there is a structure (resistor or ground?) connecting the case and what appears to be the FLD terminal.
These are the other pictures I took. Do any of...
Update:
Full field test performed (field lead on the gennie grounded). Initially, the ammeter deflected sharply to the negative. After two or three seconds, it deflected to the positive and rotated more to the right as I brought the RPMs up:
I shut the tractor off, pulled the ground jumper...
Update:
Went to the local Agri-parts store and purchased an ammeter which the clerk had to blow the dust off as he handed it to me. Here is the package tag. The clerk couldn't tell me if voltage mattered as far as if ammeter would run off a 6v or 12v system:
Next, I performed contuinity...
This tractor is a 6V system. 1951. New armature in generator and new battery (before the gennie was found to be at fault) and a new voltage regulator 8 weeks ago. Today I received the dreaded text while at work from my spouse, "The 8N is dead, again". This is the second most valuable piece of...
2010 Legacy XL. 2WD. Kawasaki motor. 60 inch deck.

This was our first year and plenty of lessons were learned. We have no equipment, but we have great neighbors with plenty of experience to teach us. Our farm is on sand and it was a very dry and hot summer so our yields were down.
Last cut of the year ready for baling. This is a mixture of...
Update:
I changed the oil, filter, trans and hydraulic fluid in the 2000 this weekend. Two questions have arisen:
This is an image of the trans and diffy fluid which came out of the tractor. looks like a beige puke. The UTF (134D Ford spec) that I replaced it with was a clear amber. Does old...
Update 2/22/13:
I successfully changed the oil in the 8N today. The biggest challenge was getting the crankcase drain plug off the oil pan. I had nothing except a crescent wrench and a cheater pipe and had to rely on a neighbor and his pipe wrench and cheater pipe. The old oil was foamy and...
I inherited a 1952 Ford 8N and a 1968 Ford 2000 gasoline tractor when we acquired a horse farm recently. The 2000 is in need of TLC, while the 8N, used to pull the critical manure spreader was reasonably well maintained by it's previous owner.
I am reasonably capable around machinery, but new...
We are about to take possession of a 30-acre horse farm we recently purchased in Michigan. Approximately 12 acres of the property is fenced pasture and maybe 8 acres are currently ç*¥nhusbanded grass hay with some fairly low yields because of it.
Approximately 4.5 acres have been sitting fallow...
