I have a 2006 Ford F-350 PSD Extended Cab 4x4 with single rear wheels and 3.73 gears. When I bought the truck it got 17mpg. At 5000 miles I changed the oil, put on 4" exhaust with a new turbo pipe, installed a MAC intake and air filter, and lastly a Quadzilla 120HP chip. After these mods I got 23.7 mpg on the highway. I only drive the truck at 1900 rpm which gives me 78 mph. I now get about 17 mpg average if I can keep out of the throttle. I use this truck to tow 50% of the time and 90% of my driving is in stop and go traffic with only 10% on the highway. I took the truck to the scales and it weighs 7,600# with me in it and 3/4 tank of fuel. I have also taken it to the drag strip and it ran 14.1 at 98mph in the quarter. I had to used 4 wheel high for the first 1/8th mile to keep the wheel spin down.
The trick is just keeping out of the throttle. My neighbor has a bone stock 2007 classic 3500 4x4 Chevy crew cab with long bet. He can do 20-21 mpg on the highway by driving it sensibly.
