as with anything.. not all are bad. most of the reconsd are simply reverse parts machines put together. if it all went good with aprticularly good parts.. might just be ok machine.

some are.. some aren't.

I bought a YM 1700 from a reputable dealer here in NC around 1992...
At the time, they were heavy into Yanmar imports getting containers at a time...
They would take the best tractors and paint them, go through the fluids, and perform typical maintenance before selling them to the public...
If a unit was not good enough for their customers they would sell them at auction...
For the record, I had my little 1700 for 14 years...
In that time I spent zero dollars on repairs, only maint costs...
Yanmar makes IMHO one of the best diesels on the market...
I was fortunate enough to purchase one from a reputable dealer...

But were they being sold as fully reconditioned? or simply re-painted tractors? ... the latter of the 2 questions being the case we are to believe has happened with the OP tractor, Its not really difficult to sort out the good dealers from the bad ones, Just ask around for references, usually you'll have someone or many people step up to recommend someone they trust,..... Just the other day I was talking with a man who admire my tractor ( YM1700 ) and would like to have one, but he said he was
a bit reluctant in buying a Yanmar because he had heard about the so-called refurbished ones that were only pc together, I told him I understood and had heard some of the same things, my advice to him was to join TBN read and seek out a reliable dealers, one who was willing to back up and put in detailed writing about the tractor and just what all had been done to it, if had in fact been reconditioned or were simply gone through and serviced,..

I also told him that I purchased my Yanmar as probably one of the ugliest he ever seen, it wasn't one of these nice new looking tractors, The type tractor I was looking for was one that looked like it had been being used:thumbsup:
it wasn't looks that I was after, it was the mechanicals, I knew if it was a good mechanically sound tractor I could make it look better later;)
after talking with the owner and him saying he used it when starting his Landscape business 2 years earlier but found that he needed a larger tractor, he let me use the yanmar just like it was mine before Buying it, he went on to tell me that this yanmar had been purchased through a 2nd party that simply imported and sold them, not a 3rd party business who claim to have reconditioned it,;) I think as a good rule of thumb I simply wouldn't buy from anyone who claim to be selling reconditioned tractors, Unless of course they can prove of what extent of conditioning done to them;)

Remember One bad apple doesn't necessarily spoil the whole bunch,

From my perspective as easy as that is to say I realize since I am here and your tractor is somewhere else its just talk but...

I would rebuild it period you are stuck with 3 options sell as is, do nothing or fix it.

And like Ernie says post a parts list and there are lots of guys here that will be happy as clowns to have something to talk about for a month or so giving ya helpful advice. :D

New liners and pistons and bearings and have the head surfaced and valves and seats ground it should be almost brand new like the rest of it. ;)

I am one of the guys on here that has been in those shoes you are in. I spent a bit more on mine than you (plus my repair wasn't a total rebuild luckily) and take my advice just fix it and go on that is way to nice of a tractor to just give up on get some fun and lots of work out of it. my .02

To folks who are more from an automotive mechanical background there's a perception that "reconditioned, rebuilt, or remanufactured" are good things.

But in the tractor world the reverse is true.

Mechanically, the common diesel or gas tractor motor & drive train will last a lifetime - maybe more than that....we just don't know yet. One of my tractors is over 50 and has been used very hard. It's fine. A couple of others are 30+. One has been used pretty hard as a construction tractor and the other one has been babied. There isn't any real difference between them in the way they run or work. That kind of reliability isn't uncommon at all for a tractor and it is the whole reason behind why we have a good grey market in used tractors.

Paint and rubber parts wear out of course, but I think the first choice is a good used tractor - regardless of hours - over a mechanically reconditioned one. By a long, long shot. They just don't wear in the same way as cars.

I agree Scotty, and I for another one sure dont think recon anything is good. The bad thing is we dont know who to trust to do whats right before the final sale we are the R&D for lots of things at our expense.

If things are rebuilt or repaired correctly and all things need repaired eventually life goes on like it should and there in lies the problem.

Seems now days mind set and human nature is do less and charge more its all a matter of fooling the eye until the warranty runs out.

I agree with you scotty. But there still are thousands of old 8ns that have been rebuilt once or even twice now. But their still running strong.
