Nice looking trailer. I'm actually considing looking at the 22 ft version of that one tomorrow. Just reviewing this site and see my Duramax Hitch from Chevy is only rated at 7000 pounds of weight carrying. Does that mean I need to replace it with a more heavy duty hitch if I am going to be up around 10,500 pounds total with trailer and equipment?

No it just means you need a weight distributing/weight carrying hitch. what is the rating for this condition? These hitches actually transfer weight back to the front axle making things much safer

I paid less than $280 for a Curt Class 5 hitch rated at 15k towing and 2500lb tongue.

You can buy and fool with one of those weight distributing hitches or just replace yours. You have a heavy class 3 it sounds like, 500lb tongue weight and usually 5k towing. Class 4 is 1000/10,000 usually.

Thanks for both answers actually. My current hitch says 7500 weight 1000 tongue or 12000 weight 1500 tongue with weight distribution. So I guess i can get either a class V hitch or distribution sway bars. I plan to tow about 4.5 hours to the hunting property, so I might like the anti-sway afforded from the weight distribution.

Who else would know the GVWR other than the manufacturer? They built it they know what it is capable of carrying. On semis or at least mine it doesn't have a GVWR on the door. They are regulated by axle weights. Generally speaking you can't have over 20k on a single axle or over 34k on a tandem group.

With regards to a pickup you won't get a ticket for being over GVWR. They give tickets if you are over your axle weight ratings, tire ratings or registered weight. The GVWR is mainly used to determine what class of license you are required to have.

I agree with getting a ticket based on tire ratings, or axle ratings. The only axle rating I know of is the 20,000 placed on SEMI type trucks. Again, the manufacturer sets a GVWR for warranty, or I suspect to protect themselve in a civil case if there is a failure of their vehicle. But the manufacturer rating isn't a law. That has to be passed by the Government, probably by DOT as they cover roads. And I am curious what authority a law enforcement officer uses to issue a ticket to someone over the limit of say, a 7000 pound axle rating. Again, that axle rating comes from the manufacturer, and they dont' make law. Being repeative, the only axle law I know of is the 20,000 limit on trucks. Again, I am talking about the difference between what is safe and what the courts can enforce. If we overload our equipment we could certainly be held liable for civil charges in the case of an accident. Just not sure what laws regulate the trailers we pull and how law enforcement can give us a ticket. I've seen this tossed back and forth on the RV sites, I can't find the site, but there was a DoT officer over there who had testified in court several times, and made these same arguments, saying the tickets based on manufacturer guidelines (GVWR, etc) weren't valid. That said, I'm not going to overload my stuff and going to made sure they meet the ratings. One would hope that would avoid civil liabilities if things went south. And if I ever get a ticket I would argue against it if it was based on the manufacturers numbers.

I bet!!!
Ever see this?

I'm a fan of going above and beyond of what I need for towing, if something happens while your towing you will have to defend yourself, you will have to say you knowingly hooked up a load that is more than the tow vehicle can handle or is rated for, all the way down to the ball rating (if the ball or hitch fails resulting in an accident)
