Orthene or its base (acephate) is without a doubt the quickest way to destroy fire ants, it will kill the mound typically within 24-72 hours, only requires about a tablespoon per mound. It stinks all to be damned but I have never seen anything kill them as quickly, or fully as it does. Down side is dogs that like stinky stuff may be attracted to it as well

And in my neck of the woods, it is carpenter ants people have to be alert for. They can be as destructive as termites.

Then there are the carpenter bees. I have seen them turn some of the purlins of our neighbors three sided machinery shed into something that resembles Swiss Cheese with all the wholes that they bored.

Carpenter bees? Yikes! Bad enough carpenter ants, but bees can defend themselves.

If you want to invest the time I know someone that rigged up a homemade steamer and kills them one mound at the time with steam. He already had a kiln built so he ran a coil of stainless tube around the coal bed and pumped water through it. He just stuck the tube down in the mound a while to try and kill off the Queen and moved on to the next mound.

I use Python livestock dust on local fire ant mounds, it's cheap and you only need a pinch to kill a mound. I keep a 2 lb shake top container in my gator and just hit any mound that pops up. Once you get the ants under control then it's easy but you still need to keep after any new mounds that may pop up or they will just eventually take over the joint again.

When receiving advice, the first thing I do is to question the source (mentally) and the reasons for the answers.....especially if the source has something to sell contrary to my current aspirations! This includes taboo topics like religion or politics and views of such.
Yep, what in the heck does a Washington state ag man know about a southern US problem. Da wont do anything to ants.... sorry. Amdro three times a year might. I fought them on 4 acres for 20 years. I finally won... I moved to NW Arkansas. No fire ants. All you can do is keep them beat down.
