Yep, I know people who change their own oil who have done this, too. I also know experienced mechanics who were distracted at the wrong time and forgot to check for the old oil filter gasket resulting in an oil leak.

People who work at quick oil change places (as well as any other business) nor the people who patronize these places, should not be demeaned simply as a group of people. To do this implies that no one who works at these places takes pride in what they do nor cares about customer service. I change my own oil and antifreeze because I have the time and the place to do this. I also have places where I can safely dispose of the old oil filter, the used oil and anti-freeze. Many people either do not or do not want the bother. I've seen all types of vehicles at quick oil change places, from ancient beaters to high end luxury cars. What, these people don't care about their vehicles or don't know any better? To assume that is simple arrogance, i.e., "If they knew as much as I did, they wouldn't patronize such places."
Regarding the prices charged for this....nothing new there. You're exchanging money for time and convenience. For some, that is the no brainer decision.
