1000 SERIES FIRST SIGHTING?

Last night because of the extreme heat I tried mowing after sunset. Now I understand why auxiliary lighting is now an option on the 1026 ! The headlights on my 2210 are fine as long as I want to drive straight ahead, could see nothing of the deck on the sides. I do have a light on the back which helped but without side lights I will never again try to mow in the dark.

My dealer has both a 1023 and a 1026, two 1023s in fact. All are sold and if one was bought today, they said delivery would be mid to late Aug. They also said they are getting decks and FELs for those deliveries. I drove a 1026R for a bit, it has some nice features.

I just bought a 1026R. FEL, MM 60" deck, will get a snow blower in the fall. Will order a 4' box blade ( not green colored). Installing a quick hitch on the back. Hope to have it next week. I looked at the 2520 close to the same price when they had a attachment special. 2520 was more then I needed.

FIRST SIGHTING/ 1023 vs. 2210 ; Went in to Deere John today for a set of mower blades and lo and behold in the L&G lot sat a 1023. It looked so forlorn and lonely sitting there facing the parking lot, parked among various Lawn and compact tractors. So I decided to take a few minutes and go over to pet him.
It's a very basic, no-frills model, no extras at all. The very first thing I was curious about was the hydro transaxle and any improvements that may have been made (since my infamous center link plate has started to seep). It was immediately apparent that this hydro is an all-new design. The center link bracket appears to be - but I'm not certain since I had no magnet on me- cast iron, cast in a single long, beefy piece from the center link mount all the way over the hydro and seemed to be attached to the chassis further up front. This piece will bear the load instead of the tranny case like in the old models. The Hydotransaxle appears to be slimmer in design which may be due to it having an actual oil cooler. It is also fitted with an oil dipstick where there used to be a sight glass window.
Skip to the front; the tall hood looks okay. I found the hood release lever protruding through the grille screen like a stuck twig just below the headlights. When I lifted the plastic hood I was struck by how light it is feeling more like a trash can lid than a tractor hood. Inside there's a lot of space but I forgot to look for the engine dipstick. Anyone know where that is? I notice there's a hydraulic oil cooler in front of the radiator and lots of space around the battery.
The sit down test is crucial. I first lifted the seat to find steel springs where my 2210 has rubber springs. Not much improvement there. Sitting down I see a lot of the controls have been relocated. Most of them are handier and logically placed. The SCV valve feels tight and precise where the lever on my 2210 flops around like a donkey's ... never mind. The brake pedal has been moved to a more comfortable spot but there is still no place for the left foot to rest, the platform is shorter. Forward visibility is good. That new hood is about 4 inches higher than my 2210 but when I got home and did some work on my 2210 I notice the view over it is about the same. The new hood may be slightly narrower, but the rear fenders are definitely wider.
A peak under the belly shows another redesign; the tranny oil filter is now tucked safely up in the chassis.
Nothing exciting here, just knowing that Deere was aware of the flaws in the 2210 is nice. I wonder who builds the rear tranny? This 1023 didn't have anything extra on it; no tilt wheel, no seat suspension. It did have the folding ROPS.

I would bet it is aluminum. Kansaki brand I assume.

Probably but I would love it if someone who just bought one knows for sure. . We can only hope JD did his homework this time and not build something that will self destruct if anyone dares do real work with it.

Yes, hopefully someone who owns one will jump in. I was giving an educated guess based on the fact that even up thru the 2720 the trans is Kansaki and aluminum.

See my inspection a few posts back...
Today at the Steele county fair the local JD dealer had a 1023 at his tent, this one set with a loader and "60d" mower. Made a point to take my wife over for a looksee. And yes this time I did manage to find the oil dipstick, in the same location as was on the 2305's. A JD employee came by and offered us bottled water but did not offer to answer any questions. Strange, perhaps he sensed I already knew more about this machine than he did, after all he could not locate the oil dipstick. I will be back there Saturday and perhaps someone will talk to me, maybe even demonstrate the quick attach mower deck.

I had the opportunity to look at a 1023 and a 1026 at the Empire Farm days in upstate NY recently. John Deere had one 1023 and 2 1026s. One of the 1026s was being demoed with its loader on a gravel pile. I did get a chance to look at the reared of the 1023 and its tag stated made in India. I was not overly impressed with either unit as they looked cheap with all the plastic components. The fender lights on the 1026 looked as though they would be easily ripped off with the first branch to hit them.
