I have a 1066 with 6200 hours, and still original T/A. The problem is that it does not want to hold back in low on a steep grade. Not fun with baler and wagon on a hill. It does fine in high and will pull in low with now apparent problems. I have checked the linkage and it seems to be adjusted properly, that is full travel on the spool valve. The seal on the spool valve does weep some.

Is there anything I can do short of a complete T/A?

Live with it or replace the TA. Your sprag is shot and the low side clutchpack isn't far behind.

You are approching the life of a TA and Rick is right.. The adjustments do make a difference and the other thing we have found is the pump that supplies the oil would be getting weak which very well will help finish it off as the tolerances get to large to fill with oil to properly engage it.

It is also important to bring up some safety issues as this same pump also supplies oil to the steering and brakes. With it using all the oil to to keep the tractor moving it very well will be failing on the other side of it's work and it might be quite a shock to you when it does! I do hope you have level ground and nobody gets hurt from continued operation.

Gentlemen, thanks for the replies. I was hoping for a miracle, but you said what I thought you would say. Seems like the smart thing this summer will be to gear down before going down the hills where it matters. Flat ground in Northern Baltimore county Maryland, I am afraid not to much of that around here.Time to start saving for the T/A this winter. How difficult is it to rebuilt the multiple controll valve while I have it apart?

Likely I will split the tractor and take the center section to some one who knows what they are doing with it. That way I can learn what I need to do the next time. Although I will probably be dead by the time it needs the next one. The T/A in my 706 only has about 3K hours on it since replaced, so good to go there.

Thanks again Gentlemen.

Many people will bring the whole center section in with the MCV valve for us to check at the same time. You might want to look at the pump as well as we have followed this enough to know that they should be changed at the same time.

This would also be a good time to change the clutch and pressure plate with a new throwout bearing, pilot bearing and rear engine seal....

Three of you have told me to do the MCV pump at the same time, so this is on the to do list now. I absolutely will have the MCV rebuilt at the same time. The clutch was brand new when I got the tractor, 1200 hours only on it. I will pull it down to check it out, but hope I do not have to replace anything. If it needs it though, it will be done. This will be a good time to open up the grease fitting on the right side of the throw out bearing shaft. That is what they make VISA for right.

It took a while, but I finally got around to doing the MCV pump and valve. First thing I noticed was that it did not take long for the new pump to prime. The steering on this 10 is way way easier too. I will not be able to take it out till tomorrow and see how the torq holds back, but I can tell either the pump was weak or all the springs in the MCV were weak. Either way all is new now. Hopefully this will solve the hold back problem in low.

I had the old girl out today cutting hay with a 5209 discbine. This was the best test I could have so far since the pump and valve (Weather here in Maryland has had hay pretty much shut down with rain for the last two weeks.) Charging almost full bore down a fair hill in H-2, around 7-8 mph, the T/A locked right down and held the tractor back. I think the problem is solved. I will find out for sure when I have 10K or better behind it baling.

Latest update, had the 8600 pound round baler out the last few days, and it held back just like it is supposed to on the hills. Thanks for the advice guys.
