What is the best two or three cutter brands out there right now in a 10ft size? Is the Deere house mower good? This will go on a JD 5065e.

I am not sure what the best two or three brands are. I can only speak for the one that I have. I have been running a Bush Hog brand 3210 offset for over two years now. If for some reason I had two buy another one, I would buy the same one again.

I really can't say for sure; guess it depends on what you want to spend, some commercial models made by Schulte will last most of us forever, but the price I've heard is pretty steep. We use Land Pride in our smaller mowers and we are on our third year with a Woods DS1260 10' model. I'm sure there are other makes like Bush Hog or others just as good, I just don't have any experience with them.

A 3210 would be my choice. Center pull, offset, trailing, semi-mount, fully mounted. However you want/need it.

i run a howse 120HD. it's a 3pt model but can be run semi-mount. good and hd, and was actually cheaper than the kodiak which had more crude looking welds.

laminated tail wheels and manual turnbuckle jacks on the rear wheel bar that can be converted with a kit to hyd.. or you can home-convert easilly too. came with a torque limiter on the main drive shaft. i've had -0- issues with mine. have used it since 2002. used to pull it behind a NH 7610s but now it lives on a ford 5000. it only gets a half season of mowing now as I added a batwing mower. I alternate mowings as I can get the corners better with the 10'er

I pull a 10' Mahindra (Kodiak) and have no complaints. Soundguy - the welds are not rough on mine .

all i can say is back in 2002 I was looking for a 10' mower.

I looked at jd, howse, and kodiak, plus a couple others at auction.

the kodiak and howse were very close in price.. the howse had better looking welds.

might have been JUST that unit.. or kodiak might have better welds now 10 years in the future!

I got a 3209 that I picked up used. Mine is a 3pt hitch type, but basically works as a semi mount as well when I extend the hydraulic top link all the way. Been very pleased with it.

We have a Woods that has been the best piece of equipment we ever bought. The smoothness of the cut is almost as good as a finishing mower. We all fight to get to use it instead of the two 15 foot batwings even though it is only 10 feet wide. Very pleasing to use and to the eye when you get through. We pull it behind a 70 hp 3 cylinder New Holland and there is no tendency to bog down at all.

I like the Woods 10' cutter, although my neighbor likes his John Deere 10' cutter. I think that in addition to brand you need to look at how you will use the cutter, some brands offer a light, medium, and heavy duty 10' cutter, and they are available in pull type or 3 point hitch.

For my needs I am using a Woods medium duty 10 foot pull type and a Woods heavy duty 6 foot three point hitch cutter. The 10' cutter leaves a great cut and is a joy to use in open areas. The 6' cutter I can take anywhere and it can handle 3" material, it also makes a great counterweight.

Woods, Deere, Bush Hog, are all goo mowers by reputation around here. Bush Hog is the most expensive, but mechanics I have talked about said they make a high quality gear box. I have heard mixed about Howse. Sounder says they are good and I know him from the YT forum, so I will talk a long look at them.

Thanks for the offer, but I want a ten footer, plus I am going to buy new because I can't see whats in the gear box. Damage, and what not. Not saying yours is damaged, but that is where the wear happens and I can't judge it without tearing the box apart. Thanks anyhow.

Thread hijack!! What kind of batwing you going to get for your 7040 there Foreman?

For a top notch ten footer look at the Shulte line out of Canada. They are owned by the Alamo group that also owns Bushhog brand and Rhino. We have a old Bushhog that has just run and run without any trouble they knew how to build them back 35 years ago!

The Shulte designs are much older than Alamo's ownership of Bush Hog.

TXFord8n,

First of all, I hope you have a bigger tractor in mind! :D (sorry, I couldn't help myself)
About 20 years ago, I was shopping for a 10' myself. Bought a Hardee pull-type. It's a beast. It spent it's first 15 years (or so) behind a 100 hp tractor. (JD 4020, then a NH 7610S) It will basically digest anything that the tractor will run over. The only issue that I ever had was shearing off the input shaft on one of the side gearboxes, and that was my fault. I don't know if the current Hardee is the same cutter, but it could be.
Five or six years ago, I was shopping for a 7' 3ph cutter. I really wanted a Rhino TW84, but let the dealer talk me into a "great deal" on a Rhino SE7 that he still had in stock. He did give me a good price, but the SE series wasn't even close to the TW. (I believe that the Rhino models are currently referred to as the 200 and 400 series respectively) Not a bad cutter, but not heavy-duty enough to run behind a 100 hp tractor. I've bent the skirt a few times and I had to completely replace the tail-wheel assembly with a much heavier one.

Point is, buy as good of a cutter as you can reasonably afford. It will pay off in the long run. Economy cutters are for mowing grass, nothing else.

on edit:
Since you're in TX, you might want to check out the Modern Predator series. IIRC, they are built in Beaumont.

Deere's cutters are made by Deere in a factory in Mexico. I think Deere actually owns the factory. Like ALL the other cutters made in USA they use gearboxes made in China. They seem to be high quality like the other major makers but they do charge extra for that green paint! :D
