You can use 0w30 or 5w30. Both would be better, as the oil pump will pick up suction faster and get oil up to the overhead valve train, especially in colder weather.
I get 5w30 Castrol for VW TDIs at the local VW dealership.
However, I've found M1 0w30 ESP (exhaust system protection) for diesels online at a price close to what I pay for the 5w30 stuff at VW. Will probably go with that when my 5w30 supply runs out. Bought a bunch with VWs free cash they gave us. Right now, the 5w30 stuff is in both the JD 2025R and the Isuzu 12.5kw generator.
I had a VW Cabrio for 5 or 6 years. It had a problem with drain down of oil from its hydraulic valve lifters. Using anything but 0w30 (lots more choices for gas engines) would cause hydraulic lifter knocking. Probably should have gone to 0w20. That's all I have in our gas engines now, all 3, even the Tacoma that calls for 5w30.
