110v welder and the 3/8 bend test

   / 110v welder and the 3/8 bend test #51
Well, lets eliminate the wire runs and sizes. Welder sets next to breaker box, plug is wired with 8ga wire. Now, is there any benefit of using a 30amp breaker over a 20amp, and does having 30amp's availalble, is it possible to pull more amps at the mig gun than it would if it was on a 20 or 25amp breaker. Or is the welder made so it cant pull more than a specific amount of amps, reguardless of breaker size, and using a bigger breaker just fooling everybody into thinking the machine will preform better.

Let me add, if its possible to pull more amps with a bigger breaker, will this effect duty cycle?

It won't effect how much the welder draws. Same settings on the machine, same current draw.

But.... You can use higher settings without tripping the circuit breaker.
If you arn't tripping a 20 amp circuit, then using a 30 amp circuit won't gain you anything.

I guess this means sharing a breaker with two different welders of different sizes, (My stick and Mig, 230v), breaker sized for larger stick welder shouldnt effect, harm, damage, the smaller amp mig, and it wont help the smaller mig machine either. Good to know since I only have one 230v outlet in my shop and it is shared by my two welders as well as my Lathe, I havent had any problems with the equipment with this arrangement, except for the aggravation of having to plug and unplug when I switch processes.

I had that problem too - then I needed two plugs so the plasma and welder could both run, then I needed a third for a second welder. I have two sons :D

My sons could care less about welding. They will grap wood and build anything, just never liked working with metal. I dont have the power to run more than 1 big amp pulling machine at a time anyways. I do plan on rewireing the shop next spring and will add more outlets, but I can only do one thing at a time so shouldnt overload the circuit

Exactly. I can only be in one place at a time, so only one machine is on at a time. I made the mistake of turning on a Harbor Freight metal cutting band saw and walking away from it. I heard it cutting away while I was doing something else. Then the changed to a buzzing sound. I looked over and it was letting all the smoke out of its motor! You know how hard it is to put the smoke back in?

You wonder how that smoke got trapped in there to begin with. lol.

Here guys I'll help out with the smoke :D

And a one-size-fits-all wiring diagram too...

Thanks for posting, Dave. I'll make a copy of that wiring diagram and stick to the inside of my welder's cover. This is the first one I've ever looked at that I could actually follow.
