110v welder and the 3/8 bend test

Can share my results of 0.024 on 230V; 115v no go for me.

Should be similar. I don't believe I can get anymore heat out of a 230V machine with 0.024 wire than I could with 115V.

Sure that will work... mainly wondering about difference/corrections needed between .024 and .030 or .035. But I don't want to steer this thread awry.

Awesome. The cottage industry - I like it.
I'm curious what you were intending to improve upon by replacing the Miller 175?

I wasn't really planning on replacing the Miller, all it's done for over 15 years is work every time I turn it on and never break down. And it's easy to setup. I did want to compare the output as it has the same rated output as the Everlast. The Everlast 140 was replacing the Hobart Handler 125. But since the Hobart didn't' get used much I thought I would try using it to make some of my brackets.

I don't get the "cottage industry" comment. What does that mean?

The thicknesses you are referring to quite a ways below the capacity of a Hobart 125. What other stuff do you make? Or did you just want to buy a new tool? Don't have to answer that,,,,, we all understand. :D

Cottage industry refers to home based manufacturing (in contrast to factory based).

I'm always trying new tools out. I can convince myself I need a new welder at any moment it seems.

I like having a 110v mig with flux core to use on little projects which was what my HH 125 was used for.

I tinker around quite a bit and do some welding through work. I mainly do estimating and PM but sometimes I get to go out and show the guys in the field up as none of them are really welders. I also do occasional welding projects through work like some handrail work at the post office and I did some welding at Wal Mart a few months back. I also keep buys at home with recent projects like building a trailer to haul firewood with and a custom box blade with hydraulic toplink for my tractor

this little welder has been a big disappointment so far
WOW, I'm shocked! You don't think the machine got damaged in shipping from here to your place do you? Like I said before the voltage was a little touchy, but it always ran the same when I put it back.

It seemed to be in good shape when I opened it up. I don't really know what the deal is. I could get it to run fine at times and then it was like something changed. When the wire was not even striking an arc I knew something was wrong as I have never had that happen before. I immediately figured it was a ground issue but after checking connections that did not seem to be it. My uneducated guess is that something is wrong with the voltage dial on the machine causing inconsistent performance and dead spots, specifically at voltage setting #4. I'll post pics.

This is where I resorted to testing each voltage setting and wire setting. The top # is the Voltage and the bottom # is the Wire speed. As you can see on Voltage 4 the wire just curled up.

That is so strange! I don't remember having one false start. Makes me wonder if a wire didn't get knocked lose in shipping!
