12' ladder in 6' pickup bed

I need to get a 24' extension ladder which I assume will be 12' per section. Problem is that my Toyota pickup only has a 6' bed.

I sometimes carry 10' sections of pipe and either stick them through the back window, or put a flag on them and let them stick out the back. Half the ladder sticking out over the back sounds dangerous.

Not sure of the local laws, but I'll be hauling it 10 miles and have to go right through a city with traffic lights, etc. It is a one time deal so I don't want to buy a pipe rack. Anyone have a good technique?

How about you put a blanket on your roof and lay ladder in bed with bottom of ladder against bottom of tailgate with a weight on it like a spare tire and tie down the front to your hooks in front of the bed. it will look a little funny but it should keep you legal.

I've transported items tied to the side of cars - open the hood and trunk to make rope loops to hang the materials. I've used carpet strips duct-taped around the object to protect the car.

Do you have a tool box or something that blocks your front tie downs? If not, open your tail gate, lay the ladder down in the back of your truck, strap the front to the front tie downs and the back to the rear tie downs, put a flag on it and go. As long as your tie downs are on properly you will be fine. Your tailgate will support past the half way point on a 12' ladder so even if your front strap did break it still should stay in the bed.

You might want to consider buying a pickup bed extender.Not sure if thats the right name.It's made of square tubing that fits in the hitch receiver,and gives support for long loads.I,ve carried 15ft. 6x6's with no problem,in my 6ft. bed.I've found lots of uses for mine,siding, metal roofing, ladders.In alot of situations it takes the place of a trailer.If I recall it was less than 100$ when I bought it.

what I've done .... tail gate up, bag of quick crete on top of the bottom ladder rung at the front of the bed .... side ties if need be to keep it from sliding side to side.

Oh, it can be reversed to carry stuff on the roof too.

Bed extenders are a good thing, They hang down heaps. Harbor freight has These on sale most of the time for $22. at that price its agood

using scrap wood from pallets. I made a ladder rack for my truck for just such an occasion. Took me about 1 1/2 hours, zero cost and worked fine by putting most of the over hanging ladder over the cab.
