Thought I'd share my early 80's 1200 problem with others; while pushing snow in one of our NE storms, the engine puffed a bit of black smoke and started a clang sound that could be felt in the operator seat. It would still run but only at full throttle. I have a full series of pictures of the disassembly. So, check your abilities in guessing this problem.

That must have been some explosion!
Look at all those blue tractor parts scatter around the yard!!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
Some even ended up under that deck!
WOW!

Steve,

Welcome to the board. Sounds like you may have dropped a valve or spun a rod bearing or possibly blown a head gasket. Not good in either case. Head gasket not as severe. The picture you posted looks like the tractor blew up! Just as well sell me that blade then /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif!

Here's what's left after a few of those minor parts blew off. Its getting ready to be rolled into the garage. So far, you've provided a coupla chuckles with the responses. I knew you wouldn't disappoint!! Suppose I'll have to show a few goodies under the deck also, but that'll be later.

Steve,
Looks like you have one of those pulling tractors..real hotrod.

Did I see a back up generator in your first picture. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Lets hope all you lost was a rod w/no damage.

Steve,
Where did you get that picker? /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif
Sure like to get my hands on that. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Steve,

I'll take a stab at it. Does it have something to do with fuel injection timing? Maybe a sheared key on the fuel injection camshaft. Keep the photos coming.

The working part of the grapple actually came out of a junk yard in Concord NH; watch closely the next time you see a utility pole being replaced. The mount came out of my shop.

So what did you find when you got the old girl tore down? Curious minds want to know! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Geeze the rate your going on tear down you have it up a running by tomorrow before race time.

I take your good w/wrenches also done something like this before.

Yep one can get some good things from a junk {poor mans shopping center} yard, and w/a little imagination the sky the limit. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Steve, a Ford New Holland 2120 I once had did a very odd thing that to this date I have never duplicated except with 2 cyle engines. Twice I have caused the diesel engine to run backwards. The cause both times was the same. I was ploughing into a pile of material and loaded the engine to near a near stall steping in on the clutch a split second before a complete stall. When the engine recovered it sounded different and when I tried going backing up, I went forward. I felt the exhaust and it was sucking. The air cleaner was blowing. Of course I immediately stopped when I discovered what was going on. The second time it happened I knew exactly what it was. I don't believe this was your problem and it does sound more like a head gasket etc., but I thought I would make other Shiburara(sp?) engine owners aware of this as I would think it has happened to others. Rat...

Sounds like there's a lot of good experience out there. The fuel injection timing people are thinking the same way I did on the first partial tear down to check the timing and gears on the front of the engine. The engine oil didn't show any chips to the naked eye but then again that drain plug isn't at the bottom of the pan. On reassembly, it was discovered that one of the injectors didn't squirt fuel; it also contained metal chips. Not good news. After getting that fixed, we're back to the same clang and no power. Steve,

Sounds like you may be only running on one cylinder. I had a "B" John Deere once that after it sat awhile the valves would stick in one hole. She would still run but not much power. Did you run a compression test on it?

Steve.
I can't give you much help with your problem./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif If it happened to me I would be off to the Kubota dealer. The only thing that might help is some orange paint./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Since you have it torn down so far.

Steve,

I had a rod bearing go bad in a car engine once. I know this for a fact becuse I took the engine apart and could see the damage. All that was left of the rod bearing were thin slivers of metal. In my case the engine would still run (even at idle), it just sounded awful! I would think that this would apply to tractors too. A bad rod bearing will sound awful, and it needs to be replaced, but the engine should still develop power. After all, the piston is still moving up and down under pressure from combustion.

Now of course you mention metal chips in an injector. I don't know much about diesel injectors, but it seems resonable to me that something in the fuel system broke for these chips to get in. Is there a way to see if the injectors are still squirting fuel? I also like the idea of a compression test. It's easy to do and tells you a lot.

Best of luck!

Peter

Well, the engine is on the floor in this picture. As removing engines go, this one is pretty straight forward. The project will be slowing a bit, since the flywheel is held on by the metric equivalent of a 2 1/2 inch nut! Nobody paid much attention to the maintenance points on this design, the antifreeze dumps into the framerail, the engine oil dumps on the front driveshaft, and the hydraulic oil runs down the return pipe when the fluids are drained.

Did you notice if the cylinder walls have any damage.
I'm still hopeing its not a connecting rod.
Sure hope you have a work bench for the rest of the tear down.
