1210 Ford
I'm a new member and have a 1210 Ford compact tractor with hydrostatic trans. Its 1985 model and was mowing the other day tractor slowed down and stopped with pedal depressed.Pedal doesn't make it move front or back so I put new filter on hydro filter head on drivers side and still nothing.Checked the linkage under trans plate and everything is attached as required.A fellow said he thought something in Hydro was broken but don't know.I drained fluid and no metal so its strange to me.What is going on as been great tractor and has under 200 hrs on it?Did notice there is a loud whine now that wasn't there before

Maybe you're not aware of it, but there is a dry clutch ahead of that hydrostat. A problem there can give you the condition you described. Does the PTO stop when you try to move the tractor? That might tell you something.

Clutch pedal feels fine and the PTO hooked to bush hog was still moving when tractor stopped which I disengaged.Got a guy looking at tractor and he said it has high pressure problem.Personally don't know what he's talking about

I know what he's talking about, but I'm wondering how he determined that.

If it's not a clutch related problem or something external related to the pedal linkage and/or the shaft going into the hydrostat, about the only (simple) explanation would be lack of charge pressure. Beyond that, I'd be looking for something internal to the transmission. Not a good place to be.

Lots of stuff on this page that COULD factor in. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Why or what is whining when motor is running as I bet that has something to do with problem?

I can't answer that based on what I see from here, but since you have no movement, (possibly) no high pressure, maybe little or no charge pressure, you could be hearing some dry parts in the rotating groups.

So what would you recommend on how to proceed to find out whats wrong?

Before anything else I would start by verifying there is charge pressure. Simplest way to do that would be remove the hydrostat filter and bump the starter and see if any oil comes out. I'm not an expert on that particular system nor do I have a book on it but most hydrostat tractors filter the charge oil before it goes into the transmission. If you see oil movement, then find a way to plumb in a pressure gauge to determine what the pressure is when running. You have to start somewhere.

So what would be the cause and fix for low pressure and do you work on something like this as I'm in Louisville?

I'm not sure how many charge pressure problems might come up? I'm just thinking of easy things to check. The diagram below shows a suction screen (item 4) I would probably look at to see what that shows. The diagram shows what appears to be all of the hydraulic pipes, lines, and such related to the hydrostat. There is nothing connected to anything else hydraulic related on the tractor so it's pretty much a self contained system. (unlike many other compacts) The previous page shows the breakdown of the transmission itself and the charge pump is internal. Since it's a totally separate system and not directly connected to the tractor hydraulic system I have to wonder about the oil reservoir and such. Are you sure it's not a low (or out of) oil situation? I'm not sure where/how to check that.
