The gears can't "slip". They are either engaged or they're not.
It's possible that either your clutch is slipping or the drive coupling (between the transmission output shaft and the rear axle pinion shaft) is sheared. If it's the former, it might just need some adjustment or a clutch replacemnet. If it's the later, it's a bit more complicated. Odd's are it's the clutch.
