Ok, just did my 150 hour service and before checking the service manual I drained the crankcase and slapped on a new filter . . .only to find out that you only change it every 100 hours after the first 100 (50 and 100). That seems like it would be a little less than once a year for me. Is everyone comfortable with that interval or are you doing it more often?

Have a good one,
Dave

I change my oil and filter every 50 hours. I do the same with my boat. Every car I've owned says something like 6-10K miles between oil changes. I have always changed oil at 2500-3000 miles.

In other words, it's my opinion that oil and filters are cheap, compared to engine overhauls.

Kubota seems very conservative with their maintenance schedule. Why would they lead you astray on the engine oil change interval? Unless you have a good reason to change it more often than they recommend, such as extremely hard use in very hot weather, working in a very dusty environment, found a hole in your air cleaner element, ran it off in a pond, etc I would follow their advice cause they probably know what they are talking about. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I would and do change every 50 hrs.....pretty cheap insurance considering the purchase price. Every car I have owned had it's oil changed every 3000 miles also.....you can pull a valve cover and find no crud.....

I am not a heavy user of tractors hour wise so I plan to change engine oil every spring to clear out any moisture that may have condensed in the crankcase over winter. I do that with my low mileage vehicles also. I will probably go with Super UDT for the transmission and hydraulics since it is supposed to handle moisture better than the standard. My L3130 is very new, less than 15 hrs. right now.

Ok, let's say the manufacturer says change oil/filter every hundred hours. Is this good enough or not? Does the manufacurer of the tractor know what the change interval should be or not? Can we make it better buy doing it more frequently? Maybe so, maybe it makes no difference at all...

Why every 50 hours? Why not every 25...why not every 10???

These questions are directed at no one really. I used to be of the change as frequently as possible mind set. Now I don't know.

I am pretty sure the more frequently you change the oil the better...can't see how new oil would hurt too much... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The filter...I keep thinking of my wood shop dust collector and how it actually filters better when it has some saw dust in it...maybe a new oil filter actually passes more particles than a slightly use one???

Again I don't have any way to know...don't know how to find out...keep thinking about that old lady in the run down restaurant that kept wiping the tables with the same cloth she wiped the floor with...thinking it was keeping the tables clean...they looked clean... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'd be comfortable with the 100 hours if I was putting it on in six months or less. I run my truck at the mfg's intervals, but if I go six months without hitting it (never happens) then I change the oil. My typical usage is 2-2 1/2 hours at a time with maybe 10-15 hours per month. (some months are 30-40 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

Anyway, I guess I'll take a sample of the oil and send it off to the people who analyze it for my truck at 50 hours and then do another sample at 100 and see what they think. If there's not too much water or anything in the oil then I'll keep it at 100.

Have a good one,
Dave

For cars and tractors, I tend to follow the manufacturers recommendations for either miles or hours of use. I'm certainly not an oil expert but have wonderd what it is about oil or an oil filter that changes based on time? If I put 1000 miles on a car in 6 months, what is the benefit or advantage (other than to the companies that sell parts) from replacing the oil and filter based on a calendar as opposed to some measure of usage?

One of the by-products of combustion is water; another is some fairly nasty acids and compounds that you don't want sitting in your crankcase for an extended time. So changing your motor (crankcase) oil and filter once or twice a year is a Good Thing no matter how little you use your tractor or car or whatever.

The best oil and filters are so cheap compared to the cost of the tractor or vehicle that frequent oil changes have always seemed like a no-brainer to me.

Thanks for the information-- will do some research and try to use my brain going forward. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
