1528 smoking issue

G'day whilst i do not know your model the following is applicable to all diesels -black smoke is excess fuel usually seen whilst revving up or under load or can also appear with a blocked air filter - white smoke is unburnt fuel caused by incomplete combustion i.e. lack of pre heating, dribbly injectors ( too much fuel in cyl) or low compression. What you are encountering is probably the injector pump going into excess fuel for start up on most machines this is done manually ( full throttle, push/pull button/lever on pump) but on some it is done automatically, this is just a starting aid and if it seems common across the range then it is prob nothing to worry about. Hope this helps

I keep my 1529 in a garage also. Mine would blow a big puff of black smoke on a cold start even after 30 seconds of glow charge before turning the engine over to crank. After having the engine block heater installed, the smoke is not an issue. It starts quick and idles smooth. I had a New Holland TC29D before the MF and it blew black smoke also. I assume its normal.

Many of the small diesels will use an thermostatic swtich that is mounted in the cooling system, that when in the open position (cold engine), changes the injection timing and can cause the puff of smoke at startup. Altering injection timing is done to help the engine warm up.
Once the coolant reaches a high enough temp to close the switch... it sends a signal to the injection pump and the timing is changed to the operating temp. setting. THis may be why some have stated that after installing a block heater, the symptoms seem to disappear.
Who is the engine manufacturer that builds the MF engine?..

The temperature switch makes sence. Could you bypass it to see the difference in start up. ?

What is everyone running for fuel? I know mine didn't act well with heating oil so I switched back to pump diesel.

I am running regular pump diesel and off road diesel does not seem to matter.

I run as well pump diesel, but add Power Service, Diesel Fuel Supplement with cetane booster in it. ( 4 oz/ 4.5 gals)

It would depend on whether its a normally closed or normally open switch. This system has been used on Perkins for years and more recently the small Perkapillar diesels...
I'm sure it can be bypassed, but you would NOT want to leave it that way due to excessive fuel dilution in the oil from the timing being altered.
