Oil & Fuel 1533 Fuel Solenoid Shorted Out ??

Hello, Was on my 1533 yesterday when I heard a Pop and saw Smoke on right side of motor. After Investagation I determined it was the Solenoid on the back of the injector pump ( melted the rubber cover ) has anyone ever seen one of these short out before ??? Thanks for the help

Hi I have a Challenger 265B. I had my fuel solenoid go last week. It was a pain to figure out the problem. I am not used to the work on these tractors. I was heating a shed because the dealer I bought it from thought it was a frozen line. Well I parked the tractor for 45 minutes and then it would not start.

I found power going to the solenoid. I removed the solenoid and then the tractor started. I have to find a new one. It is a Woodward 1503. I thing I may be able to use a massey or acgo one.

Hi Mike, mine also is a Woodward 1503 !! I guess I will do some calling tomorrow to see what I can find out. I found 1 on jackssmallengines.com for 173.19 but I am gonna see if I can beat that after I do some calling.

Sorry if I misunderstood if this is the case, the above is a "Fuel cut off" solenoid", all it dose is shut down fuel to the injector pump by using a "rod", this is the only way to shut down the engine (or in my case wouldn't let my engine start when it went bad)... Mine didn't short out "to say", I didn't see any smoke, but it was dead. "If" you need to use the tractor, you can remove the solenoid and start her up, BUT you will have to use something to push in the fuel stop inside the pump to turn her off.

Anything I can do to help just let me know.

Yep and it has been said they don't last. But when they go they go early in life, the older they are the better chance it will last.

If mine goes bad again, before I by a new one, I will either try to fix the broken one or come up with something else to shut down the fuel to the pump.

I received my solenoid and I am back to work (waiting for the snow). It was an easy fix once you know what to look for. I was missing out on the loud snap when you turn the key on. I now know for the future and won't spend days trying to heat the shed to get the fuel to flow like one dealer suggested.

Mine was $220.00 shipped. While waiting I cut the shaft off so I could reinstall it in the event I needed to run the tractor. This way foreign material could not enter in to the area and cause a bigger problem. The old part sat idle until the new one arrived two days later.

I have a Chinese knock off of a Woodward on my Branson. The replacement parts are real Woodwards, and the prices are breathtaking.

These are sealed dual coil (winding) solenoids. One winding is strictly for pulling the solenoid in. The second is a holding winding. A timer on the tractor drops the current to the pull-in winding about one second or less after it is first applied, when the ignition is switched on. The holding winding then keeps it in until the ignition switch is turned off.

If the pull-in winding is energized too long, it will burn out. If the burn out is caused by an overly long timer period, or one that sticks, the replacement solenoid is likely to burn out as well. The pull-in winding draws a very heavy current, as high as 41 amps on some models.

In the (good) old days, diesels didn't have this sort of expensive nonsense. The fuel shutoff valve was held open by a spring or cable friction. An attached cable with a knob or handle ran to the operator's position. Shutdown was done by pulling out on the knob or handle until the engine died. Simple, effective, and the engine required absolutely no source of electric power to keep running once started. If there was no spring, you had to push the knob back in to be able to start the engine.

Woodward has a solenoid catalog available here. The 1503 is no longer listed. It may be available to OEMs on special order.

Woodward solenoids are sometimes listed on EBay.

I also had a 1503sol Woodward Solenoid burn up, 2005 MT2265B Challenger,
Luck I'm still under warranty, bought it from Cat, with 133 hrs, and insisted on a new warranty..
I may "adapt" a make over if it happens again, making a plate with a cable and out to the dashboard, has anyone tried this, the solenoid sure is a poor way to keep something running, with all that current, why wouldn't it burn up.
All the old diesels, just pull the cable! to shut them off.

Are the Woodwards made in China? I assume the solenoid in our 1523 is a Woodword. It looks the same.

If or When it lets go, I think I will use the Woodward.

Look at the mark on the solenoid harness connector. Apperently original production solenoids have an orange mark, then they went to a green mark and now they use a red mark. Solenoids with green or red marks are improved over solenoids with the orange mark.

Hi, I'm having the same problem on my MT265B. I heard a Pop and saw Smoke on right side of motor and smell something burned. The tractor continue to run and I was able to use the tractor for about half an hour until it stalls trying to dig too deep. After that, I was not able to start the tractor again. I followed the smell and found the solenoid melted. Can you tell me how to temporary start the tractor again? It's not in a safe location and I can't even tow it because the bucket and scrapper were down. I really need to move the tractor to a safe location until I can get a new solenoid. Local dealer don't have in stock and takes a few days to get it. I removed the solenoid but still unable to start the tractor. It cranks but sounds like no fuel. Do I just disconnect the power to the solenoid or remove the solenoid altogether? Thanks for your help.

you'll have to remove the solenoid. don't run it for long as oil will leak out. You will have to manually shut it off as well

Thanks. It works. I was able to start and move the tractor. Now just need to find the part. Nobody was able to find or cross reference the Woodward part number on the solenoid. Anyone know what's the new part number?

I had the same problem with my 285B Challenger (same as a 1547 Massy) this past fall. $ 200.00 plus dollars later I was on my way. The same component went out on the L-10 Cummings motor thats in my International truck that I use for towing my toyhauler and it cost $29.00 rebuilt. Couldn't buy the Woodward one rebuilt.
