Check the thermostat for proper operation it very important that the engine gets up to temperature.
If the radiator gets warm as soon as the engine is started the thermostat may be bad.
Top of radiator should be hotter than bottom by a significant amount.
It can be difficult to get the engine up to temperature without a decent load which varies according to horse power. A ground engaging attachment will place a load on the engine.
If you had a tractor driven generator (PTO) that would be the perfect way to apply a constant load for a1/2 hour or more.
Mowing, tilling & pulling a box scraper will also work the engine.

My y YM 1700B had a similar issue when I used it, but not when my son was putting in deer plots. Finally figured out I was running around 1500 RPM for short periods but he was running 2200 RPM for prolonged periods. I started working the 1700 harder and the problem disappeared.

Me too, but not as severe.

When I bought the second YM186D, this current one with a loader, the seller said it must have worn valve guides causing the clouds of smoke upon starting and when throttled up. This has cleared up over the years I've owned it.

Apparently the prior use by an urban landscape contractor didn't work it very hard. Likely 30 years of put-putting around at low rpm.

On the 1700 even a B should not have a water pump. My guess the Thermal Sys. works better at a higher RPM's than put putting around. I believe one of the main reasons they went to a water pump cooling Sys. JMO... and something to consider if that's true.
My Org. YM2000 it was the muffler I had trouble keeping clean. After I finally did remove and clean it. I don't have much of any smoke or buildup on the cap!

Actually the B did come with a water pump. Also a dash pod, upgraded side panels and different headlight bezels. I guess like the difference between a Ford and Mercury. Same platform with some upgrades.
