Today I made a seal with my dealer in N Florida for a 1610.
He does all his own reconditioning with about 10 employees including mechanics, painters and yard workers. He took me into his shop and yard area where the customer rarely goes. The place was a beehive of activity. As I had posted previously while considering a YM1700, this dealer goes to Japan personally and picks out his tractors. He speaks of Vietnam reconditioning with distaste. His mechanics run every tractor then dismantle every tractor and repair as they find needed. All sheet metal on every tractor is sanded and repainted. All fluids and filters are replaced along with new seats. They are then reassembled and tested. If everthing works ok, they are then moved to the sales area.

He gives a 90 day warranty with full repair of major systems for 30 days. After 30 days he offers a 50/50 split on repairs for the next 60 days.

I selected an untouched tractor from his lot and it is now being refurbished for my delivery in about 5 working days.

We went to this process because he did not have the tractor I wanted on display in his sales area. In all, I would guess he had at least 50 tractors on his lot.

His offer which I accepted is, 1610 with 90 day warranty as mentioned, 5' Caroni finish mower with remote grease zerks to simplify servicing. for $4250.

Yes he does and an India product named Enrich or something similar. I notice he has a sale on the Indian tractor. 36 horse for $8900. Branson tractors are more $$

What a coincidence. I went by there saturday morning, on my way to an antique tractor show in starke. I looked over an old farmall H he had.

He had a good deal of yanmar parts in stock, and stated he would fix the yanmars he sold, but not ones sold by others.

That has never made sense to me....it is like saying please keep your money I am in business to pay taxes and keep employees happy. I don’t like customers dumping other dealers crap in my lap and expecting me to fix it for free that is for sure. But money is money and pays the bills no matter who the customer is

Yes, what is one to do, if say he moved to that part of the country, and brought his Yanmar with him. He would either have to fix it himself or let it fall apart? Like you say, it doesn't make much sence, is he trying to say he makes nothing working on the ones he sells, give me a break.

Ain't it the truth! When I was repairing/rebuilding air tools, it was for my brother who was a Matco Tool Distributor, but we were more than happy to repair tools for the Snap-on and MAC distributors (and they were glad to have us do it because they didn't have to ship them off to their company and they got them back quicker), so everyone was happy.

It doesn't make much sense when you look at it that way but how about this- We import a fair amount of tractors every year. We do all of the maintenance, fluids, etc... whatever is necessary to make them reliable tractors. We stay fairly busy all year round doing just this. If we started doing repairs on other tractors, we would either have to hire more help & expand our shop (both add expenses), or slow down on our tractor sales.

I agree that money is money, but there is a point where the extra income gained from repairs will not pay for the added expences of making them.

As a side note- There are not that many gray market tractors in our area to ever have to worry about this. We will gladly work on anybody's tractor that needs it. I don't mind working late for a little extra income, but I can see why some dealers have that position though.

I can see the idea behind your statement, but what would someone like me do if I needed service? I bought my YM1700 from a private party.
Now what if, there was someone down the road who knew more than I did, had the tools and parts to complete the repair, but refused to accept my cash because he didn't sell it to me originally? I somehow don't understand that part of it.
I wouldn't expect a dealer to work on a tractor he didn't sell and not charge for it. I know a lot of people have bought "reconditioned tractors" and have called Wayne at LMTC for CHEAP repairs or advise. Wayne doesn't do that, nor should any other dealer. But I would like to think that there are people out there to help owners with repairs no matter who they bought from. For a price.......and I wouldn't hesitate paying it if I needed it.
