Roger, thanks for hanging in there and offering some further thoughts. No, my machine doesn't have an electrical shut off. I am also pretty used to the "yanmar-hammer" from my two cylinder 1300D, which I also feared had some major problem when I first got it and came to realize was just fine. In the case of my new machine, the 1610D, it may be ok but I think something is not quite right. Without a load it is fine but when going up a hill at less than substantial revs it does ping, much like a car. Your notion that the fuel might be bad is interesting. I put in new diesel fuel, having drained the old and installed a new fuel filter, when I first got it--this fuel being straight from my local gas station. There's only a bit in there so I'll soon swap it out for new and see if that makes a difference. I suspect it is something else, however, such as either bad injector timing or fuel pump maladjustment. Think I'll just haul it in to a local shop and see what they say. Thanks again for your help.
