One thing I can add. The Yanmar alt/gen has a 5 amp output. You can run a battery dead running the headlights for an extended period even at full rpm. I have done it. It is a long ride home in the dark after a hard evening mowing.

The connection is shown directly to the battery. Nothing is shown inside the generator. I suspect it uses diodes for rectification. As I recall, my autos of that vintage all had diodes.

Soundguy, i agree the VR may be a paperweight for me if its method is field current regulation. I am looking at all alternatives including the bridge rectifier /voltage reg approach. I have the old Yanmar unit soaking in Acetone now to try and remove the potting without destroying it.

Impressive.. and a very limited use design. I'm glad I swapped a 30ish amp job into mine.

Reminds me of my JD-B.. it has a 7 amp genny. Puts out 7a at max rpm.. and about 5 at rated rpm. Funny thing though is a standard 35w lamp uses about 5.83 amps at 6v... make that 2 lamps for headlights and toy are over 11 amps. Add the rear light and to are at almost 17 and a half amps.

I imagine there were quite a few early JD farmers driving home with orange /dim/no lights, and hoping they didn't stall as there would be nothing left for the starter!.

Wow.. know that we know it makes a whole wopping 5 amps.. I'd guess a single epoxy diode and a handfull of tip packaged 7815's ( or 7812's with an artifically biased ground reference... ) would do the job. They're thermally protected, so parallelling won't be an issue... Sounds like a 10$ fix...

hi all,
this is a very interesting thread-- And, I'm wondering if I might too have a 1601 with similar problem. My charging light was coming on before I changed the battery. I've tightened the alt belt, & replaced the battery, but have yet to see the light come back on... With that said, what is the implication of having a faulty regulator? Battery won't stay charged, gets run down? Of course you'd want to rectify such a situation, but if you don't what's the worst to happen? Thanks ! -arthr

The problems you listed would be typical of alternator / regulator failure. The longer you use your tractor, the more often you would need to charge the battery. Eventually cycling (with a battery charger) will cause battery failure. It would be best to accurately diagnose the charging problem and repair, vs. changing out batteries and topping off with chargers.

Checked my alternators output today. 16V at 1500 & 20.5V at full throttle.
