I have a Yanmar 1700D that while driving in 4WD there's a clicking/clanking noise in the area of the front axle. Pushing the FEL into a large pile of dirt and trying to move forward results in a much louder noise. Shifting out of 4WD and there's no noise. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting? Any help is greatly appreciated.

One idea woud be to jack up one front wheel with 4 wheel drive disengaged, turn that wheel listening for noise and also checking for looseness in the knuckle. Nothing shows then try the other side.

What winston said. But sounds like a bad bearing or a tooth on a gear is missing or its clunking in and out of connection on one side??

Thanks for the comments. Soon as the water goes down a bit I'll do some troubleshooting.

Another possibility is that the front driveshaft is missing some of the balls in the CV joint, or that one of the CV joints is heavily worn to a point where it can pop out and "skip", if that fits your symptoms.

there are no u Joints on this tractor. The closest thing is those CV joints that have ball bearings in them.
