I have read several posts about 1800 starting issues and suggestions on bypassing the start switch by using a jumper wire between the battery cable lug on the starter and the solenoid. I'm able to get the starter to turn over using this method but the engine will not start (key in in the run position). Once I was able to use the key to start it after I put the solenoid back on but only once. It's as though there is no fuel being injected. I know there is a cut off solenoid that engages when you turn the key off but is there anything that has to energize to get the fuel flowing? My next step is to go through the wiring and try to clean all the connections and grounds. Any other troubleshooting suggestions are welcomed.

A lot of people, including myself, have installed a 12v relay that is energized by the start switch, which then in turn powers the starter solenoid.
As far as the fuel shutoff is concerned, with the key in the run position the shutoff solenoid should be energized and providing fuel. Checking connections (and the ignition switch itself) is a good start.

Thanks for your help - cleaned up the ground connections to the frame and then bypassed the seat switch caused it seemed to be questionable. Seems to be starting now as it should but I may go ahead and start getting everything together to install the bypass switch to the starter.

From looking at a picture of the solenoid on the engine, the solenoid is a key stop solenoid and should only be energized when the engine is being stopped, it does not need to be energized for the engine to run.

Had similar issues, found one of the fuses had dirty contacts, cleaned them and all was well.
The issues I had were . No fuel pump running with ignition on stop solenoid not functioning. Did run with full tank of fuel, think that was a gravity feed.

What I've found on my G1800 is, it's a voltage issue. It needs to be a very strong battery. Mine did this all the time with the battery that was in it when I bought it used but only after it sat for a week or two unused. I could do the jumper wire to start it, mow my lawn and it would always restart right away when it was just used. Sit in the garage for a week, no more start. Voltage was ok, it wasn't horrible or anything, plenty enough to start it with the jumper trick. But I replaced the battery with a quality one and keep it on a trickle maintainer in the garage and it has never done it since.
It's somewhere in that little black box on the left side. that thing is seeing less than 13 or something and just not firing the solenoid. A bypass probably is a good idea as well. If mine acts up again, that's what I'd do.
