There are no lock washers. Regarding alignment, that's not really an issue ether because the mounting plate is precision machined (I'm assuming it was machined correctly of course). I now think the bolts probably began loose and I neglected to check them as planned. I will watch them closely for a while.

One interesting side point. The engine connects to the pumps via a plastic gear. The gear is mounted on the pumps and fits inside a plastic ring mounted to the engine. I guess plastics really are the future.

Correct. This is the reason I can't really reinforce the mounting. Basically, without a lovejoy, the motor and pump assembly must vibrate together as one unit.
