Hi folks,

I got another little bug to fix up on the 1864. The Choke.

It is VERY stiff. I have to use two hands to pull it out enough to start when it's cold.

Now normally I wouldn't sweat it. I'd pull the cable and, if it's one of those standard metal-wrapped jobs, soak it in a pan of 30wt oil for a day or so, wipe it down, and reinstall it.

But, as some of you know, the choke cable doesn't really go to the choke. It goes to the, well, what do you call this thing...

The "Choke-Throttle-Governer assembly from ****"

This is the layered assembly at the front of the engine where everything comes in, gets mixed mechanically, and then outputs to the choke and throttle levers on the carburetor.

Only a Sadist or Stephen King could have invented this thing.

I want to approach this cautiously. I'm not sure I could ever get this thing back together if I take it apart.

Guidance is welcome :)

Hey Larry,

It's always something!

I had a similar problem on my 5252 and just put a rag on the backside of the cable and applied spray Lithium grease LIBERALLY. My was so stiff I pulled the knob off the end of the cable before I decided to try some lube.

Might be a quick fix?

There is just a lever and a linkage to the choke plate on the 1864 setup that operates the choke. This linkage operates independently of the throttle lever and cable which are part of the more complex spring loaded governor/throttle linkage. You should be able to pull the choke cable out relatively easily and lube it without upsetting the throttle linkages. :)

Cool. I'll give that a try this weekend!
