1910 completely rolled over

I don't know if the engine kept running for a while after it flipped over, but after the tractor was rolled back onto its wheels, there was oil everywhere.

Do these old tractors have any sort of engine cut-off when they roll over? My concern is that if the engine kept running, the oil pump would have started sucking air within seconds I would think. It would probably have taken a minute or more before the engine would have stopped from the fuel pump sucking air.

I figured I should at least change engine oil and filter, and check the coolant level before attempting to start it again. Anything else I should check?

Tragically, the operator died in the accident, which was not discovered until several hours had gone by. The red engine kill knob had not been pulled. The ROPS had been removed years earlier as the tractor would otherwise not clear the garage where it was kept.

Sorry for the loss of the operator. I'm not aware of any tractor with a roll over engine kill switch other than the standard operator presence switches in the operators seat. Be sure and check ALL fluids, including trans. I would consider barring the engine over by hand before hitting the switch, in case it filled the cylinders with oil or fuel. Don't want to cause damage if we can help it.

It's possible for engine to be hydro locked from oil on top of pistons. I would suggest pulling injectors to save bending piston rods.

Thanks guys. I'll check all fluids before proceeding and pull at least one injector. I'll start by taking off the loader so that I can better get to things.

Am I the only one here that get's a queasy/weird feeling over owning a tractor someone got killed on?

Pull the engine over by hand,,hydro-lock can do quite a number on the engine with the starter...Sweep, I have never noticed a sign on the seat saying the last soul that sat there had expired? Seriously, If I knew the person, yes, it might make me sell it...I've had one neighbor shot and killed, it is not the best feelng in the world, either..

I checked the fluids and coolant looks good, but the engine oil dipstick is dry.

It looks like a lot of engine oil made its way up under the hood when it was upside down. Looks like the area between the fuel tank and head is where it came from.

I don't plan to keep it. The operator was my father. It was pretty tough pulling the bush hog off and the FEL and getting the thing into the shop just now. The accident took place Saturday. I was the first one at the scene after my mother found the rolled over tractor when he didn't come up for lunch. He had been dead for hours at that point.

A couple of friends came over yesterday to help me get it loaded onto my trailer and hauled off my parents property so my mother wouldn't be constantly reminded of the accident.

The best way I know how to deal with tragedies like this is to try to stay busy...

Just got back from the funeral home dealing with various paperwork and arrangements.

Didn't really want to mess with the tractor, but for my mothers sake, I wanted to get it off the property, especially being it was sitting where the accident took place.

Going back over there to pick up his car, as she doesn't want that reminder there either.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Our family will be praying for yours as you go through this difficult time. I have shared with with my young 20s son who loves ot put the ROPS bar down..I CAN ONLY HOPE NOW and Perhaps now he sees it differently.

Very sorry for your loss. As far as the tractor goes I would pull the injectors and change all fluids. Then I would pull the kill knob and bump the starter a few times to make sure there was no damage to the rods from hydrolock. If it spins freely from the starter and gets oil pressure then reinstall the injectors and leave one line loose so that it will prime and fire off. Then tighten the final line and all shoud be good. How old was your father?

As for the tractor, you may need to replace the battery if the acid spilled out. May consider changing filters as well as the fluid.
