1920 puchace help

I've been reading this site for a while trying to learn as much as I can about Ford/NH cut's and I have learned a lot from you guys. Now I need your help. I have found a 1997 Ford 1920 with 300 hours for sale at what I think is an excellent price. It comes with a rotery cutter, tiller, and landscape rake and asking price is 12k. I'm going to look at it later today and need to know what I should be looking for. Are there any problems with the 1920 that are hard to see? What should I be "heads-up" for?

I have never owned a diesel engine. My only experience is with my ford 8N that I have owned for about 4 months. I have realized that the 8n with a trip loader is just not cutting it.

I owned a 1920 for a number of years.

At 300 hours it isn't even broke in good yet /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Price being good depends ont he options and implements. I only figure half value on a use dimplement. If they are new implements figure full value. So that's gonna be like 100+$ per foot on a tiller.. and 100-175 a 'foot on the mower, depending on manufacturer.

Is the unit 4x4? what tranny does it have? ( 12x4 12x12? etc )

What kind of rubber? ( turfs ar ethe most expensive.. industrials next.. aggs last. ) How is the wear on the tires.

Check it in all gears and ranges.. check clutch adjustment.. 3pt lift.. does it start easy cold? das and indicators work correctly? smoke? ( other than a light dark puff when you suddenly throttle up.

Oil leaks? check especially the front axle and nuckles.

Check the antifreeze for signs of combustion by products, and the engine oil for signs of water.

Engine dipstick is on the right loewer rear of the engine. Tranny fluid is a small rubber bump kinda rear and left of the left brake pedal.

For comparison.. A few years ago I paid 9500 for my 1997 1920 with 7xx hours, 4x4, 12x4, industrial tires that had medium wear on the front and nearly no wear on the rear.
I recently traded it in onmy 7610s and got nearly my full purchase price out of it. If in good condition they hold their value well.

Thanks for the reply. For most of those questions I do not have an answer. I will have to check on it later today. I forgot to mention the tractor has a loader.

Check all those things out. If in good shape and working order, it seems like a good deal with any tranny. If all checks out, and if its got a hydro (not sure if one was offered on the 1920) or the 12x12 shuttle, it sounds like a fantastic deal.

Now hearing that it has a loader.. I would say it was a good deal.. and if it has the 12x12 it will be great.

That is a great price for that tractor with that few of hours and options. Around here you would be looking at paying at least $16k for a 1920 with fwa and a loader and the 12x12 tranny. There is nothing wrong with the 12x4 tranny as I have put quite a few hours on both machines. I like the shuttle over the 12x4 if you are going to use the loader a lot but you can make due with the 12x4 at that price if that is what it has.

I was under the impression that the front drivetrain was more of a true front drive/ diffy.. etc.. and not just an assist. Or is this just a nomenclature issue.

Or is this just a nomenclature issue. )</font> Nomenclature, Ford New Holland doesn't call a machine 4WD until it has 4 equal sized tires.

Andy is correct but it isn't just CNH, I do not know of any company that calls their tractors 4wd (except Kubota) as when you talk of a 4wd at a dealership the salesman will think you are talking a 300 hp and bigger tractor, well at least at the rural farm dealers. This has been discussed before, Compact buyers are use to the 4wd designation which is why Kubota uses it (it helps the buyer know what it is) but CNH and JD call it FWA unless they have changed recently. Sorry for any confusion.

I figured it was just a designation issue. Had to ask to be sure though.
