1952 Ford 8N 302 v8 conversion

I don't think I would run oversized and loaded tires:laughing: but I did just see a converted tractor running a 600 HP 383 stroker on one of Rfds tractor shows...

I am guessing you are right. Look at the loads put on many old tractors at the pulls. If common sense prevails, plus I use my seat belt, ROPS and wheelie bars, I should be fine and so should the tractor. If I go full throttle, dump the clutch, get the rear end hoppin', then I would expect trouble. Any one with experience on this?

No problem. The point of conversion like this is for the novelty of it and is either a "street rod" kind of thing or a parade vehicle. Very few, if anyone, expects to do such a conversion and for much more than pulling a hay wagon. I know guys with 2200 lb street rods with 600 HP and have rarely driven over 50 mph let alone driven it hard. That's not what such conversions are for and if you think otherwise, say hello to my little friend Mr. Darwin.

My dad put a 4 cyl ford overhead valve motor from a wrecked Asplundh chipper in a 8N 20 some years ago and the guy he sold it to is still using it.
I wasn't there for all the stuff that had to build (he was a school teacher at the time teaching farm power mechanics and did it at school) so i couldn't comment on how it was done other than the adaptor plate and extending the hood several inches.

You got it guys, it is for the novelty and because I want a hot rod (tractor). Parades, snow plow the driveway, pull a grader on our 3/4 mile driveway, no real horsing.
And the sound! Anyone else love the sound of a V8? Plowing snow with the 4 banger diesel NH just doesn't sound the same.

Still interested in what the most "work" anyone has done with a V8 n conversion

and

What was someone doing when they broke one?

One thing that may save him is the light weight of the 8N. Hopefully it will spin before it breaks something.

true.. torque isn't much if the tire spins and blows smoke. ;)

there is actually a published weight limit for that size of axles. If you look at the pie weight application.. they will show light and heavy sets.. the heavy sets are ony reccomended for the heavy axles..e tc. so that is a defacto weight limit right there.. etc..

Hmm.. didnt I get shut down in another thread for saying the same thing about wheel weights and axle ratings? Seems I was told it doesnt effect the axle...? Hmm

Wasnt from you, soundguy.

not sure about the other thread ( don't recall it? ).. but if you look in the ford parts books. the 6XX are not reccomended witht he HD pie set.. only the LD set. the 8xx are reccomended for either... and they have the hd running gear.. etc.

Well, if you ever get traction, it could start as a wheelie and rotate around until you and the tractor are upside down. Need to be careful of that.

I don't plan on spinning much, I will have wheelie bars, ROPS & seat belt, so I am well aware of that issue. Weight shouldn't be a problem as I do not intend to pull or carry anything heavy.

What I see as a potential problem is getting the rear end hopping and breaking an axle or snapping something in one of the trannies.
