What part # are you referring to in the parts catalog.. the link you posted is attached.. is it the same as the 301A ?
Shows it for a 2640 model...

Where there is a will there often is a way. Good save.

It's actually a fairly common practice. There are welding electrodes (sticks, and wire) for building up machinable surfaces.

I have no idea about the 301A. I'm working on a 1979 2640 with reverser, so may be the same tractor under different paint, but I haven't looked. The drawing for the forward clutch pack is the same. The bushing I'm talking about is part no. 1, bushing for the forward clutch drum, in the drawing of the clutch housing.

When I had the Forward Clutch Pack out, I could shake a lot of slack in the shaft coming out of the reverse brake, so I decided to split it between the clutch housing, and the transmission, after we rejoined the first split. There was a lot of stuff worn back there too.

There is also slack in the shaft coming from the rear end too, but I'm going to get the reverse brake back together before I tear anything else down.

I never knew anything about this until I found this thread, so certainly can't claim to be an expert. I replaced that wear surface part no. 21 too, and that was quite an adventure.

Bushing T23211(key 1) has 140 different machine applications including both the 301A & 2640. See attached photos below.

If you have Windows 10, search for "Snipping Tool" and use it to post parts drawings.

You posted on someone else's thread, so there might be confusion, since you have a different model JD than thread title.

Thanks.

When I get the chance, I'll start another thread, and move my posts in this one.

For an update: After getting the second split back together, for rebuilding the reverse clutch( only needed bushings, and thrust washers), I decided to replace all the worn parts in the steering system. Long story shortened, it now operates, and drives like a new one. In the process, I also fixed all the leaks, and squeaks. It's been used all day for several days now. I didn't want to paint it before I fixed all the leaks, but I will get around to painting it sometime soon.IMG_2433.JPG
