1983 Gravely 5665 Runs Poorly

I have a Kohler engined Gravely walk-behind or riding sulky machine. It has been erratic lately, backfiring at times and refuses to run full rpm. Also does not idle well & usually quits. Runs well at mid-range rpms. Already drained gas bowl, used Seafoam additive, use non-ethanol gas, replaced the spark plug.

I'm thinking points. Anyone familiar with getting parts, like points, for these elderly machines ?

You might be able to figure out which engine you have and look at the manuals at this website (GravelyManuals.com - OldGravelys.Info: Gravely Manuals & Parts Lists: Non-Gravely Engines) and see if the part numbers come up on your searches. If you already have parts list your search will be easier..

Thanks so much Hawkeye. Good info. Meanwhile I found a local Amish small engine shop that stocked points for my Kohler engine. Steep I thought at $35 for points and condenser but the orig owner bought the machine new in 1983, I got it in 1994 and I'm reasonably sure the points have never been changed. So if the new ones last that long who's complaining on price ? As soon as I get time I'll put these new points in and report on the results.
