As others have said, it's the lift seal. My 1700 was fixed with 50 bucks in parts and 20 minutes of work. Took longer to get the tools together. Good luck.
"50 bucks" ???
Not for me!
I just did the job today on my 1989 model 1920 FEL.
The seal from Messick's was $42.95, plus some other O rings, and shipping......$64.79.
Then a paper gasket....$6.49
Of course: The old piston seal was so very loose, that it promptly slid out of the cylinder, then back and down, into the upper part of the gear case.
Had to buy a strong 3" magnet to fish it out.
The new piston seal is a hard nylon/plastic(?) type, and was impossible for me to force on, so I took it to a Case dealer.....$20 fee (I did not want to risk destroying a $42.95 seal).
Total = $91.28, plus gas for driving 50 miles to/from Case.
There is a reasonably good how to do the job U-Tube video.
I am just 8 days short of 80 years old, so the job took me a lot longer than the "bspeedy" 20 minutes!
It would certainly be a much quicker and easier task for a young buck.
Bolts torqued to 60 ft.lbs., and......I gotter done..... arthritic hands and all!!
