(I met a local tractor repair shop mechanic a couple of weeks ago that is in love with the 6.0 and actually started a side business modifying them after installing the ARP stud kit in his.) Get to know him real well and make him your new best friend. Put the ARP studs in and do the EGR valve delete, add a 4 in exhaust and gages. You will have good solid truck. Good luck. I am real pleased with my 06 6.0 F-350.

mine hat a superchips tuner in it till the computer was replaced under some sort of factory recall service. tunner and ecu were vin locked, and I had lost the cash reciept for the tuner.. thus they would not unlock it for me. but otherwise.. the superchips had some decent functions.. including a tow safe, non towing economy, etc.. etc..

Ditto on the stud and egr delete kit.

If the think has over 80K on it and is still holding heads down.. it has lived past the infoant mortality state.. past that.. the egr is the big pain in the neck with them

that and keeping good oil in them due to the fuel injection setup.

Just curious....... would an EGR delete be illegal?

Technically yes, but you really only have to worry about it if your state does diesel emissions, and then only if the tech see that its been modified. Of course there is the odd chance that a LEO could pull you over and do a roadside inspection (in any state). The possibility of getting caught is there, but most likely extremely slim depending on where you live.

Personally, I would never own a non-deleted diesel, though mine never had so much as a cat from the factory.

Put the ARP studs on it and if it has a EGR valve do a delete and you will have a real solid truck. The best part is the stout chassis and nearly bullet proof Torque Shift Tranny.

Yes, the 6.0 had its problems but its blown way out of proportion. Ford has sold more diesels than GM and Dodge combined with nearly 75% of the Super Duty line having yhem versus GM's 31%. Dodge is around 82% but do1/7th the volume.

Chris

I don't want to start an argument here. I'm just wondering why you are downplaying the Ford diesel problems? You may not have had trouble with yours, but you say they have to have new head studs and a delete to be a real work truck. If the problems are so blown out of proportion how could they have led to the biggest warrantee disaster in Ford's history and a complete breakdown in Ford's relationship with Navistar after so many years of good cooperation with the 7.3? This led to the engines being produced under court order and a couple of serious redesigns. It's not so much a total numbers game as a percentage game. The percentage with problems was way too high. Even Ford had to acknowledge the problems were serious.

I'm glad yours has been so good.

we had a bunch o fthe 04 f250.. we saw the early units with the head problems and held off till corrections were out. some of our trucks have had egr work.. some not.

that's a later in life issue with the egr. it's a 'maybee' issue as well.

the studs? that's just good planning.. especially if you are running modded.. etc.

i do tend to think the engine was a lil too hot roddy for the packaging though.

compaired to the 7.3 .. well.. hp wise vs displacement.. it's an odd couple.

then again.. it's what i expect too.

take a big engine.. make it smaller and make it make more hp, and it goes from ebing robust and relaiable to being edgy.

i see tractor engines that have gone down that path.

large block lower ci machines repalced by smaller block machines run harder.. etc.

at least they don't use a quart of oil per 1000m like a gm 5.3 and considered normal when new. ;) ( had to poke that in.. i got one..so it's not a sucker punch.. it's an observation.. :) )

Everything about the 6.0 is a reason to own a Cummins. Overly complicated injection system, unreliable, hard to work on, no off idle grunt whatsoever compared to a 5.9 and the list goes on.

The newer 6.0's are better, but compared to what? The dealer group I work for sells all 3 brands and the difference in failure rates for the 6.0 and 6.4 engines is MUCH higher than either the Cummins or Duramax.
