I am running a modified 03 F350 7.3...
In order of build start with gauges, intake, exhaust, programmer or chip...
I have the older style programmer that works great...
It is an Edge Evolution...
Big difference in power...
The Diesel Stop is the best resource on the net IMHO...

Been visiting the Diesel Stop. The consensus there seems to be Tymar intake, new downpipe and then chip or programmer.
Some say the downpipe is a bear to replace (loosening motor mounts and jockeying things around) and others say not much hassle at all depending on firewall clearance. Diamond Eye makes a 2 piece replacement. I don't know if that would eliminate any clearance problems or not.

Since the topic includes trannies ---

Have any of you changed a later model O.D. elec. tranny with a good older model C-6,TH 400 or Chrysler 727 ?

I have had problems out of all the later models --- (Gm.,Ford and Dodge)

I prefer the older trans but I've read that the newer vehicles electronics are tied to engine functions and can't be changed without redoing the puter.
The other "worms in that can" can be worked out (Speedo-cruise ect)

Does anyone have a way around the problem?

I'm sorry, but none of the older transmissions are any better behind a diesel that gets worked... the newer transmissions are far stronger then the old school 3 speed boxes.. the c-6 and TH400 last forever behind old gas engines, but face it, a 454/460 is running really good at 500 FT/LB.. the 7.3 powerstroke makes that stock, and 700 is fairly easy.. in other diesels 1000 FT/LB is not that hard..

All your replacement downpipes for the OBS trucks should be two piece; it's the only way to fit a round one in there. I've never had to mess with motor mounts, just cut the old pipe out and bend the pinch weld out of the way.

As I said, not a diesel mechanic by any means, but I'm thinking that it won't do maximum good to increase intake without improving the exhaust also.
Heck, these mods alone may do what I need without a programmer.

The Banks one I put in many years ago was one piece. Not saying it was easy but I did it without moving motor mounts..I had a rattle/buzz under some conditions, I had to pound a little dent in the passenger floorwell to stop it but it is not noticeable from inside.

A lot of the newer trannies are modified old ones. Take for example, the Ford 4R100 internals 1-3 gears are C-6 with an overdrive added. I have seen this in Mopar and GM too.

Yes, a manual trans swap. It is fairly easy to convert a 4r100 truck to a 6 speed manual.

There is nothing wrong with a 4r100 trans once you build it right.

I'm thinking my best option at this point is to talk to a local shop about the downpipe replacement. I'll get a Diamond Eye or other reputable unit for them to install. I've got PB Blaster and torches, but don't want to get involved with wrecked fasteners, flanges, etc. when my local NAPA is closed for the night.
If they can swing that, then I can do the intake myself.
