1987 john deere 855 sold and bought a YT235 Yanmar, love this tractor
started doing this last summer, changed out the fuel filter seemed to fix the problem. once cold weather started my tractor started stalling again, took off the filter and lines, from electric pump to filter housing fuel was running out fine, took off anyway and blew out with compressed air just to be sure. put back together and ran unit, the fuel in bowl went down to just the bottom of filter bowl, well about 1/4 to 1/2" off the bottom. talked to john deere mechanic in middle falls, he said to loosen fuel filter, turn key to on and fill bowl up to top and let some run down the side, then tighten up and run for five minutes to let the air escape. in which I did, and after five to ten minutes of pushing snow the fuel in bowl went down to almost the bottom again and it stalled.. is there something in the tank restricking the flow of fuel or line crushed down? can you guys help

Maybe try blowing back thru the fuel line that feeds the fuel bowl with some compressed air.

I agree with dirtworks, seems like something is restricting the flow to the fuel bowl from the tank or the fuel pump may be getting weak. Also check your fuel tank cap. some are vented and if the vent hole plugs up the pump will be pulling a vacuum not letting fuel pump through.

What they said...Old fuel hose can get soft and collapse, and the vent on the cap can easily be plugged or frozen.

Sounds like you're not getting good supply from tank. My 755 started doing this last summer, turned out I was running out of fuel when the fuel gauge was still indicating 1/2 tank. I haven't torn into yet- I just keep the tank level above 1/2. There's either something wrong with my fuel gauge or there's a hole in the pickup tube in the tank. You might make sure you've got plenty of fuel in the tank despite what the gauge reads.

well I must report, that I blew back up the line towards the fuel pump with no results, took off the line incoming from the tank to the fuel pump, while all along the fuel guage read 1/4 tank. line in hand blew in and what da think, nothing at all, tank was empty.............later got some fuel, line off this side of filter and all the fuel you could contain was coming out............put back together runs great..............lets just say I'm a little embarassed

Don't be embarrassed. My fuel gauge was very trustworthy for 15 or 16 years. When it happened to me, I was deep in my woods with loader and back blade on, not sure how was gonna pull the dead machine out of there. The gauge was reading almost half a tank, so it couldn't have been that.

Then I remembered the time as a 12 or 13 year old that I tore down the carburetor on my minibike because it wouldn't keep running. Found nothing wrong, then realized nothing had come out of the fuel line when I disconnected it to remove the carb! Yup, it had just needed fuel.

Someone else on here had reported fuel gauge issues with an 855 some time back. It was the combination of the two memories that got my problem diagnosed within about 15 minutes. (After I had pulled the outlet line from the delivery pump and got no meaningful flow.)

Glad you got it back up and running!

Sometimes we tend to complicate a simple matter. Kudos to you for taking the time to post back the solution.

Well it started stalling again, so, after reading some of these threads, drove over to Martinckas John Deere in Shaftsbury, Vermont. They sold me the fuel sending unit and rubber hose and filter, new screws for top of tank if need be. Now, it's fixed runs like a champ.

Well, hello again, writting from motel in kittery, maine, have somemore news.
While at Martinkas in vermont they ran serial numbers, couldnt quite pin it down as to what exact
year my tractor is. Found serial number pages on line, shows my tractor to be a 1987, not a
1998 that the dealer I purchased it from in granville quoted to me. Never the less, I still love
my little tractor, original one of the swing cylinders on the backhoe spitting out oil, removed,
insided rusted, Reeds hydralics made me new cylinder. Now other side leaking like a sieve.
John Deere wants $651.00 for a new cylinder, and Reeds Hydralics went out of business????
What? Thats a whole nother story, found new place east of albany new york, they will cut off
old barrel attach new barrel and seals for between $100.00 and $150.00 and since, bought new manuals
for #7 backhoe, #52 loader, the tractor itself, and cds also. Still having issues with weak strength
digging with backhoe, and FEL, reading alot of these posts where 855 owners can lift the front of
the tractor off the ground, and also with the backhoe. So will be ordering a gliserine filled pressure
guage this week for starters. I shouldnt badger my 855 too bad, next door neighbor used it to
dig about 40' or so unearthing his water line just two weeks ago, and said wow, digs like a champ.
Five feet deep for 40' feet, oh, I have a question on the ROPS, does John Deere sell kits to convert
to a folding ROPS? I cant fit my tractor in my garage. If I think of it tomorrow I'll call hudson river jd.,
What about Yammer, the 855 is a yammer I wonder if they make a folding ROPS for me? Another call
I guess....

I recently got my 855 and love it ,way stronger than I even imagined it would be and I have 2 properties I'm clearing at the same time and it skids logs with little effort , I filled the rear tires with anti freeze and the fronts are foam filled and heavy ! and mine will lift the front tires off the ground easily ! I want the #7 hoe and will have one as soon as I find one in good shape and reasonable priced . I found all the books on cd in ebay for $10.00 and free shipping ! Post some pics of your 855 we don't get to see alot of them because so many people finance their tractors and that leads to most posts dealing with new machines . 001.jpg008.jpg007.jpg011.jpg

The John Deere manuals show the serial number range for 1987 models to be 420001 to 475000. I assume yours is in that range. The 855 is not a Yanmar tractor, but they do have engines from Yanmar. The early model tractors were designed and produced in the John Deere Horicon, Wisconsin factory. About 1992 they moved to Augusta, Georgia when JD built their new factory there to produce the then new 5000 series tractors and the 7/8/955 tractors. I am not aware of any foldable ROPS ever being available for these tractors.

Glad to see someone else from Greenwich with a simular tractor. I recently got a JD955 to add to the fleet...
