Re: 1st time changing oil in B2400...Murphy\'s Law
Well now, I've done some dumb things in my life. So, I read this message a few days ago, & just thought upon it. I wanted to give a funny, informative, helpful, & pleasant reply.
The thought, "What the heck were you thinking why do you want to ruin your tractor!?!?!?!?!?" kept screaming through my brain, so I really couldn't write anything I wanted to.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I guess my only issue is that you tried to drain the engine oil, got a cup or two at most to run out, & decided to run the tractor some more to see what will happen. 90% of the time, really really bad things will happen..... You really can't do that..... You need to never start an engine if you think no oil is running out of the drain plug. That is a very dangerous (for the engine) thing to do. Your first message sounded like you just did not care if you ruined your tractor - let's keep draining oil, and see what happens. That can't be - you've got to sit down & think something like that through in the future. Both the engine & the front axle is very, very expensive to replace, 5 grand or better. You need to think things through when it comes to lubrication. It is vital to your tractor & implements. The right amount in the right place of the right kind.
Now, no question is a stupid one, & glad you posted here.
What was kinda - no; really - stupid was to see you had a problem going on, and to continue operating the tractor. Should something like this happen again, stop. Turn off the key, & don't mess with it! Ask your questions (here or dealer or wherever) and go from there.
But don't ruin your expensive machine. Don't keep using it when something is obviously wrong.
It is easy for me to sound critical; I've helped chang oil in cars & tractors since I was 6 or 7. To me it is obvious you look for the crankcase of the engine, and it is obvious the difference between engine oil & some type of tranny oil.....
But that is not my point here. If you have zero experience & a poorly written manual, there is nothing you did wrong, nothing stupid about your actions ->
Until, you saw there was a problem going on, and you continued to operate the tractor.
If there is a problem as serious as no oil coming out, or oil building up to double it's proper level, one has to stop & figure out the problem, or get help to figure it out. You just can not continue to operate the tractor at that point!
I hope it all works out for you. How much oil does that front tranny thing you drained normally hold, I'd be worried about it losing some life. They take a lot of stress, and run without oil they don't last long..... The engine, with double it's normal oil, would start splashing, which can cause foaming, which can cause air bubbles which reduces lubrication.
It was not stupid to get the wrong plug. It wasn't stupid to try to figure it out, and it was downright very smart to ask some questions here. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
As for me, I went round baling for a neighbor today, road ditches. As the tractor leaned a bit, the pto stopped. I haven't checked the trans/hydraulic oil in a long time, let it get too low! Wouldn't pick up oil with only a slight tilt.
So I'm stupid too, that is poor maintenence on my part, stupid stupid. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Can hurt my rear end, hyd pump, cause foaming, slipping pto......
