bryk, Dont worry about defending yourself everyone makes mistakes. You have to remember most long term tractor owners are very mechanical they have to be welders, carpenters, mechanics and a number of other professions by necessity, so I think its hard for them to fathom someone not instinctively knowing which drain plug to remove. I bet you will never forget where the drain plug is now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Byrk,

Did you just give Trescrows a promotion? Never heard anyone refer to him as theological... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That was in reference to his "MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

As folks have said, I have defintely learned a couple things.

Look on the bright side, folks. You didn't have to hear
about my experiences with the 50 hour service...I bought
the tractor after its 50 hour service. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

One must remember.....Even monkeys fall out of trees!!! Your learning curve has taken another leap. Keep up the work and I agree with you for the most part the owners manual was illustrated by a blind man!

In defense of my being my usual jackarse self /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, if you drained the oil and assuming you pulled the engine oil plug and not some other plug and no oil came out that would indeed be odd. In fact, I would suggest that the engine had very little oil in it to begin with--too little for safe operation.
You know, I think some one is pulling our leg and it is kinda funny /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif, thanks, I needed a humorous moment /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
If in fact only a cup of oil came out I would have to say that engine is likely ruined because it had been run with no oil /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. If further you had checked the oil and found that the oil level was correct--before operating this poor unit--- and only a cup of oil came out of said drain plug--then I would have to say the plug you pulled was not the engine drain plug /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. Since, I then understand, correct me if I am in error, you then operated the tractor with some fluid--engine oil or axle fluid or transmission fluid--undetermined /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif-----missing from the tractor and the engine temps got higher than you had seen previously----hmmmm /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif, I wonder why?
Please /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif, in the future what they meant by draining a warm engine was that the engine should have been run until warm with oil in it---STOPPED----oil plug removed and oil drained into a suitable pan. Oil plug and filter (if changed) replaced and then put in fresh oil. Check the dip stick level after adding the amount required per manual or slightly less and adjust by adding a bit more if needed to full. THEN start the engine and allow it to idle 'till oil pressure light goes out. Check for leaks and drips--voila /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif--oil is changed without ruining an expensive engine.
Goodluck /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif, I hope it all works out for ya. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I won't be PC though and tell you everything is OK /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, best I can tell from this is you likely did damage the engine or transmission but I will cross my fingers that you did not and hope for the best.
Oh, always check the oil level before each use, at least until you bond with /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and understand /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif the machine. J

Re: 1st time changing oil in B2400...Murphy\'s Law

Well now, I've done some dumb things in my life. So, I read this message a few days ago, & just thought upon it. I wanted to give a funny, informative, helpful, & pleasant reply.

The thought, "What the heck were you thinking why do you want to ruin your tractor!?!?!?!?!?" kept screaming through my brain, so I really couldn't write anything I wanted to.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I guess my only issue is that you tried to drain the engine oil, got a cup or two at most to run out, & decided to run the tractor some more to see what will happen. 90% of the time, really really bad things will happen..... You really can't do that..... You need to never start an engine if you think no oil is running out of the drain plug. That is a very dangerous (for the engine) thing to do. Your first message sounded like you just did not care if you ruined your tractor - let's keep draining oil, and see what happens. That can't be - you've got to sit down & think something like that through in the future. Both the engine & the front axle is very, very expensive to replace, 5 grand or better. You need to think things through when it comes to lubrication. It is vital to your tractor & implements. The right amount in the right place of the right kind.

Now, no question is a stupid one, & glad you posted here.

What was kinda - no; really - stupid was to see you had a problem going on, and to continue operating the tractor. Should something like this happen again, stop. Turn off the key, & don't mess with it! Ask your questions (here or dealer or wherever) and go from there.

But don't ruin your expensive machine. Don't keep using it when something is obviously wrong.

It is easy for me to sound critical; I've helped chang oil in cars & tractors since I was 6 or 7. To me it is obvious you look for the crankcase of the engine, and it is obvious the difference between engine oil & some type of tranny oil.....

But that is not my point here. If you have zero experience & a poorly written manual, there is nothing you did wrong, nothing stupid about your actions ->

Until, you saw there was a problem going on, and you continued to operate the tractor.

If there is a problem as serious as no oil coming out, or oil building up to double it's proper level, one has to stop & figure out the problem, or get help to figure it out. You just can not continue to operate the tractor at that point!

I hope it all works out for you. How much oil does that front tranny thing you drained normally hold, I'd be worried about it losing some life. They take a lot of stress, and run without oil they don't last long..... The engine, with double it's normal oil, would start splashing, which can cause foaming, which can cause air bubbles which reduces lubrication.

It was not stupid to get the wrong plug. It wasn't stupid to try to figure it out, and it was downright very smart to ask some questions here. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for me, I went round baling for a neighbor today, road ditches. As the tractor leaned a bit, the pto stopped. I haven't checked the trans/hydraulic oil in a long time, let it get too low! Wouldn't pick up oil with only a slight tilt.

So I'm stupid too, that is poor maintenence on my part, stupid stupid. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Can hurt my rear end, hyd pump, cause foaming, slipping pto......
