I have owned cheap tractors before and 4K is going to buy you nothing but headaches.

Either up your budget or hire the work done until you can spend more. Is the pasture smooth enough to mow with a zero turn? You can knock out five acres faster with a 60" zero turn than you can with a tractor and a five foot shredder if it is smooth. The tilling is a once or twice a year thing it would be no big deal to hire out.

A decent shredder and tiller for a tractor will be in the $1000 range each so half your budget is shot just on implements.

I agree with this post.

Sure, there is a chance you can find a $4,000 tractor that will be dependable and not require any expensive parts or repairs, but there's an equal or better chance that you will be continually sinking time and money into it. For me, it's not worth the frustration or the risk.

If a Kubota BX will work, and if you don't need a front end loader, then you can buy a BX1500 or some such for $5,000 or so if you keep your eyes open.

I gave away my 1982 B7200D, straight 3x2 gear, no power steering, but with with loader for $4,000 and the buyer knew he could not find anything close unless he spent $6,000-$7000!

The tractor was very well used.

New makes sense. Tractors are not cars.

Some good advice here. I would suggest that if you can up your budget into the $6-8k range you'll find some reasonable options. My 1979 Deutz D4006 is worth around $5k and it's....well used. It's value is because it just never.stops.running. Tractors under $4k are going to stop running. A lot. And they might kill you.
