2 bottom plow Q's

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

cowboydoc - not sure about the torque but that Case sure could pull a load. I would pull a baler with a hay wagon behind that up some pretty steep Western PA hills. It had a triple range transmission.

We also had a Farmall M and it could pull a load also. It was bigger than the Case. But I am sure some of the new John Deeres have many times more pulling capacity than the old tractors that I operated in the early 60's.

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

There were those who prefered the swinging drawbar to the three point . The larger the tractor the less chance of having a three point hitch.

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

Hi Egon--In Ky, the 3 point was a blessing in the small tobacco and corn fields (1-10 acres)--Working the tractors in small fields, sometimes required 3-4 attachment changes daily--I can remember our neighbor taking 30 min+ to bolt on his sickle bar mower to the rear axle of his H Farmall and it took us about 3 min to hitch the sickle to our VAC Case 3 point, with no heavy tugging and lifting required--I realize that many larger row crop areas of the country had adapted to pull type implements and did well with them.--Ken Sweet

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

We converted our Farmall M to 3PH but some of the standard 3PH implements did not work well on the Farmall because it had a very high profile. If I recall correctly, the rear tires were nearly 6 foot tall.

Yea, that's what I figured. But it looks like I'll never see it. He never called me back. Probably already sold... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

I grew up in Alberta farming country where fields were very much larger. A model H was considered a small tractor despite those large wheels. A WD9 was a large tractor then and would now be considered medium or less.

Different circumstances/ different tools/ different definitions

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

Scratch that. He did call. I'm going to see it next Sat. It's a MF Model 55 two bottom hillside plow. I imagine it is similar to the one in my previous post, just with 4 instead of 2 'boards...

Re: 2 bottom plow Q\'s

rule of thumb according to 1994 john deere farm management handbook is 15 hp per bottom and that agrees with what I have heard from other people along with time to plow an acre with a 4 bottom plow is an hour so I would guess it would take about 2 hours to do your 1/2 acre with a single bottom plow. which isnt bad for doing it once a year

I would suggest the 1-16 plow approach.
keep it easier on your tractor, storage maintenance, so on.

My 33 engine hp pulls a heavy cat. 2 trip plow OK but take it out of 4wd and no weight up front and its a waste of time.
