2 inch receiver welded to lift arms

Bob,
Perhaps I am missing something, but if you want it for a hand winch, why not just weld a hook or an eye on the top of your bucket? If you plan on using it for "stuck in the swamp" stuff, it would be sufficient. Or just get a 3-4" nylon web tow strap and loop it around the bucket/QA plate for when you need winching.

I have this feeling that I am missing something; local conditions, challenges, new welder... :)

I have the hitch Q/A plate that I use with a trailer ball to move trailers, and with a big hook for chain/winching projects.

I haven't need a winch attachment point-yet. It is something that I fear needing, as I will probably need a 300' towline if I do.

All the best,

Peter

Yeah, I was thinking put a strap around the nearest tree/anchor point and hook the winch on the tree end. Put how would you stabilize a hand winch from twisting all around while trying to crank it? That's why I figured he wanted a solid mount on the tractor end.

Dear MR,

Twisting, as in rotating around the cable?

Can you help me out on how an attachment point would affect this? I can understand a rope having some amount of twist. But if the rope is attached at the tractor at an eye or by a chain or loop of webbing, they would all have the same, rope induced twist issue. What am I missing?

All the best,

Peter

I took a few concept pictures. I clamped the 2 inch receiver on, no welding yet. Here it is attached to the large bar. It would be blocked by the rollover arm so that won't work.

I clamped it to the chassis between the lift cylinders. This looks promising. I think I can easily crank the winch from the side without risk of injury. Comments please.

I do have to keep the arm raised while using it. Also I could put a hook on the receiver and us it as a tie down or towing or what ever.

Bob,

Why not just put a hook or an eye down there, then you wouldn't have to be crouched under the lift arms? Toss the winch platform around your pull point, hook up the webbing to the PT and off you go.

You could also use the hook for dragging... Or put a big loop on like this that you could use for a tie down while trailering, or to winch off of.

All the best,

(With the arms in the raised position, the center of gravity is going to move higher, if it is an issue for you...)

Peter, I like the flexibility of the 2 inch receiver. I have several things that can attach there. I have attached a picture of one.

Please note that I am thinking of raising the receiver up on a 1.5 inch high U bracket. It will be welded to the receiver and then the bracket will be bolted to the PT. I still don't want to weld to the PT for some reason. I guess I want to be able to remove it if needed.

So, my two cents....... I think this is not the best plan. I think you need two different devices. Your first concern is getting stuck and pulling the PT out. IMO the only good pull point on the PT is on the front frame or rear bucket area, pretty much where mine are welded.

If you put the hitch where you are suggesting, it opens up a hole can of worms. First the safety police will be giving you heck about working under the arms. Second, if your PT dies in the woods the lift arm is going to be down. To access this is going to be impossible, or at the least you are going to end up running chain / straps through the arms and maybe bending them.

I think an attachment plate with a receiver welded on, and some hooks welded on are the best solution.

Of course I have missed something like you do not weld or you hate the idea already so I aplogize if that thread got by me

Wood, thanks for your input. I post here to get ideas and suggestions from you and other great people.

I like where you welded your hooks. The 422 does not quite have that same structure, still, something might be done.

I already have a quick attach plate with a 2 inch receiver on it, so I can always take that out to the PT if it is really needed. It's a great attachment.

I always carry the boat winch as shown above with me and I would like to have a place on the front to attach it to.

I think most of my use will be to leave the hook in the receiver. I may make some other stuff to go there. Maybe a very small box for hitch pins.

I do weld, I just have not welded to the PT yet. I have made several attachments including the 2 inch receiver plate.

The problem with a dead tractor is you cannot get the current attachment off to put on a different QA plate with your winch or hooks on it.

A stuck tractor that needs to go forward is also a problem because even if you can detach the current attachment, raise the lift arms and mount your winch or hooks to the QA, you still have the implement in front of the tractor.

I do like the idea of a 2" receiver on the front deck for attaching hooks and such. However, I do not like the idea of anyone going under there with the FEL arms raised. That's how a lot of skid steer operators get killed or injured.

If you do decide to mount your winch under there, be sure to make some safety tubes to fasten around your raised cylinder rams that you can lock in place to prevent the FEL arms from lowering accidentally.
