2 nd layer roof shingles?

Another risk of shingling over if your state has updated code and excluded the practice of a second layer as a qualified re-roof. Home owners insurance may require proof of a qualified re-roof after a period of time or for new policies.

Several friends and my mother in law were threatened of home owner policies not eligible for renewal if they didn't put a new roof on.
Fla. seems to have much stricter regulations on roofing than most states, makes sense being in hurricane country.
Not sure where the OP lives, probably should check state/local regulations as to whether they allow a 2nd layer. If you do go with 2nd layer, I wouldn't bother with the intermediate layer of felt.

FWIW...It really does not matter how long a warranty is good for on roofing shingles...IF they are not installed according to the manufacturers specs...there is no warranty...
I have never seen a shingle wrapper that did not include installation instructions...including second layer applications...

building a deck, stairs, or something to eliminate the 3 foot drop from the patio door they had installed thirty years ago and never did anything with;
Build a railing around the opening, 6" off the wall with one 5/4 x 6" deck board. Basically a 6" wide patio the width of the door. Now the door is a full length window with box sill.

By the time that he gets done messing around putting a screen door in, he could have built a set of stairs. It's a handy doorway anyways and I wish they had put something in back when they started the project.

Hmmm ...... I've been out here 40+ years. My insurance company has never asked me anything about my house. Except when I initially applied.

Perhaps because I've faithfully paid and never had a claim.
They'll take the money, but payout maybe a different story.

Thanks everyone for the help. I decided that I was possibly just trying to avoid the work and mess of a strip down lol. But decided to strip it and use membraine underlayment followed by the shingles. Sometimes there is just no avoiding work lol

But I do appreciate the responses here. It made me really think.

Thanks again.

Just for a little humor!

Just got back from a few days in Michigan's north country. We rented a cabin on a lake that turned out to be a little more rustic than we expected. I noticed the shingles on the roof were well past their replace by date. Then, I noticed the layers. I counted 5!!!

At least it was clean.
Hope that is a super duty structural roof.
5 Layers of shingles is a LOT of extra weight in Michigan's Northern snow country.

You just described my mother... until 2 months ago. Apparently an inspector visited her house, now she has a list of things which need to get done, including removing two trees growing over the garage then cleaning the moss off the roof; building a deck, stairs, or something to eliminate the 3 foot drop from the patio door they had installed thirty years ago and never did anything with; and a few other things. She won't let me cut the trees, and finding somebody with time to do it before the deadline has become a challenge.
My brother's going to put a screen door on the patio door, not sure how that qualifies but what I think doesn't matter. (I suggested putting in fiberglass steps like they should have done 30 years ago.)
For what it is worth: putting fine garden lime on the roof will kill the moss, but it takes time, and may require several applications.

I did ice and water membraine under the shingles on my new house 3 years ago. I figure if and when, I will be old enough that I will not be the one redoing the roof. Not sure what stripping the membraine will take. I might be dead by then and someone else will have the problem. I feel the membraine is like a second layer of roof protection. Jon

25 years ago when I built, my bottom rows all curled after 1st winter even though I had all required venting.
The factory rep compensated me for that damage.
At that time he told me that the best roofing approach was 100% membrane coverage and then normal shingles to protect the membrane.
Every roof I did after that sported full membrane under normal shingles and none ever leaked.
Nice thing about membrane is the very minimal labor involved as after all it takes no time to unroll the membrane and peel the paper off.
Membrane will not resist weathering hence a shingling is needed to protect it.
