2 Stroke oil Mix question

Price is high? It is cheap for what it does...I love the stuff and works at 100+F and below 0F....
I'm mostly familiar with Canadian prices, about $4 or $5 a litre for your average motor oil. Synthetic around $8 a litre. So to me $8 for a quart is the "high priced stuff".

As a teen we water-skied a lot behind an old Johnson 25 hp.
Our standard mix was 1 qt SAE 30 non detergent per 5 gal of gas.
No 2 stroke oil as it cost more plus we got discount by the case.
We burned 3-4 tanks per day every weekend plus a couple during the week days.
Did that for some 5-6 years.
Must add that that motor jumped off the transom more than a few times.
(std ops was drain the carb, blow dry the plugs and continue on)
B4 selling that old jonrude I tore it down thinking it must need rings ore something but to my total amazement it was just like new.

Wonder if today's motors would stand up to that sort of use/abuse?

This is my exact same experience with the Lark 35 Evinrude... dump a quart of 30 weight two stoke from 1958 and go...

stihl is only available thru authorized dealers but you can find it on ebay as well..

Amsoil is available online ( AMSOIL - Synthetic Oil, Motor and Engine Oil, Lubricants, Air Filters, Oil Filters and Greases) and from local dealers (they have a locator on the website) - Amsoil has about 5 or 6 different types of 2 stroke oil - so watch what you select..

BUT you will pay full retail for Amsoil online unless you pay the $10 for a preferred customer membership.. its worth the $10 because you will save that much on your first decent size order.. Shipping can get costly, but you can also pick the product up at their regional warehouses if you have only close by..

Not sure where you can buy Husky oil.

Thanks Brian, Until last year I used the bulk 2 stroke and ran them rich. Year before last I rebuilt my 034 and found stuck rings. I thought I was doing my saws a favor running rich until then. I've been pleased with the Homelite oil but hearing the guys talk about these other oil makes me wonder if they are way better. Thanks again.

Not 100% true. Look online and some dealer will sell at PC prices since they buy at wholesale (cheaper then dealer/pc)

Stihl's Oil in our region (Eastern US) is packaged by Omni Packaging but from what I understand it is made for them by BP/Castrol to their formulation here in North America... they had Porche Motor Company (same as one that makes the cars) conduct Independent Anaylisis and tests and beat Amsoil with their regular oil comming in third behind the amsoil - they used the same model engine on continuous feed int he test like the old castrol commercials til an engine blew to determine the longest run time and then the took down the engines - We recomend you use the exact ratio called for by the manufacturer as the the story I got is that Amsoil's Universal ratio of 100:1 blew the motor in no time - they restarted the test to be fair running the Amsoil to 50:1 and it kept up with the Stihl... what you have to watch is there is an oil company that buys recycled oil from Dealers/Parts Stores - they recylce it and package it for some name brands .... As far as older equipment the rings were sometimes thinner and had larger tolerances so it required more oil to maintain the compression... If you run one rich like the man said above you get excess Carbon build up resulting in what is called "sticky piston" where the rings can stick in the piston grooves and allow the piston to slap around and cut grooves in the cylinder wall.... we have seen an engine where the piston actually was stuck in the cylinder - Stihl makes a "De-Carbonizer" to clean cylinders due to this.

Ive been using the Amsoil 100 to 1 mix in all my 2 stroke equipment. They start better, run better and do not smoke. If I were using a chainsaw under heavy load conditions (ie chainsaw milling ) I would increase it to 50 to one. I get it for ten dollars a quart which makes 26 gallons. You cant beat it.
