i just asked the guy that did my unit, he says a 2 ton, new short lineset and air handler is about $4,000 rough guess. needs to see project. but i guess the industry is now headed to propane based units again....doing away with the current R410A soon. go figure. stupid things keep changing. . . . due to Calif regulations.

after next year, can no longer install R410A units. has no idea what new units will cost...as they dont exist yet.

he said theres all new rules coming forth, as the new chemicals well be mildly flammable. so new safety requirements as to handling, transporting, finding leaks, etc.

hes thinking of switching professions...becoming a long haul truck driver

Noticed some of the plug in appliances are now propane refrigerant.

We have added a small table top ice maker for the PACU station and it works very well and under $200.

Time will tell on longevity.

I was looking at $1800 to replace the 7 year old ice maker.

its amazing what an undercounter ice maker costs. i had to replace the one downstairs and about passed out. there not even refrigerated so the ice can melt off and be fresh as needed.

i paid $1,799 in 2016. the same unit is now over $2600.

I don't know about an R22 system I have changed over an older R12 and a 123 system to "R290";
The one 134 system I used cans labeled R290 it lost most of the oil so I added a 134 compatible oil
and the R290 and that system cools better then it ever did.
The older R12 system was one that had a small leak and it would cut out on low pressure every spring when we started it up,
I just started topping that one off a 20# bottle, turning it upside down to get liquid I did it for 3 years running and it is one of the coldest cab tractors we run now. I haven't done it this year yet, because it's still working good.
As far as an explosion hazard, get real, how much is in the refrigeration system. Certainly not enough to be a major hazard with a slow leak.
Dissipation in the air will have it in a non flammable concentration almost instantly.

explosion hazard for the new system is the bulk can the installers carry in their rigs.

And what's that going to be a 20 or 30# propane tank such as every RV trailer and small motor home runs all around with,
and 3/4's of the US uses for their BBQ grills.

agree, but when did the truth rule over laws and regulation. anything to add to cost and heartache.

the guy tells me hes gone to meetings and they have warned the guys new laws are a coming......mind you, the units themselves havent even been invented yet.

i remember years ago the electrcal NEC code first required ark fault laws...but a working ark fault device had not yet been invented. Idaho opted to delay implimenting the new rules for 3 years.
