2000 to 1700 thermostart

The original question was about a 1700. I responded to Mark, who mentioned how he thought it worked on a 1700. The 195 may be the same, maybe not. Only ducksjunk knows for sure /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some 1700's had TS some did not. I have had a couple of 1500's with TS but the majority did not. One of the 1500's was set up so that the ignition switch was turned to the ON position and you pushed a button to initiate the TS.

Here's a photo of the right side of the engine on my YM1110D. Just behind the air cleaner you can see the reservoir with a small fuel line going down to the TS plug. The plug is threaded into the intake manifold, and has a wire connected to it with a small screw.

The TS is NOT supposed to be on with the ignition switch in the run or start position. If it is, then you will continuously drip and burn fuel in the intake manifold all the time the tractor is running. The reservoir will empty, and you will probably burn up the TS heater.

Turning the switch to the left is supposed to turn on the TS, but I think the better way to set this thing up is to have a separate momentary contact switch to run the TS like the 1500 was described above. That way, you could also run the TS while cranking the engine rather than just putting it on before cranking.

Here is a picture of the dash board of a 1500 I had with Thermo Start . If you will look you will see a chrome button on the left side of the dash opposite of the ignition switch.

And here is what it looks like under the hood.

Thanks for the responces and pictures. I will have to look at mine this afternoon, but I don't remember having a threaded inlet in between the two injectors like yours. My air cleaner is on top instead of to the side, but I do have a hole in my dash were the TS button might have been at one time. I say this because my ignition switch is on top of the dash instead of in the front. Thanks!

fig,

Here's the diagram from YM195/YM240 parts manual. (US version YM1700/YM2000). As you noted the ThermoStart is screwed into the intake manifold horizontally. Its about the size of a spark plug.

That ThermoStart module is also used in ThermoKings, the refrigeration units on the front of semitrailers. It costs $15 from a ThermoKing parts house. Ask for a "ThermoStart for a Perkins Diesel". Its the same identical part.

California,

This is why I love this site. Thanks for the information and the exploded parts diagram! I will try to find one.

This is a timely thread. I was tinkering with my 1500D this morning and wondering what that button was for. Haven't needed the thermostart yet, but it is good to know.

BTW, Brent--is that a foot throttle I see below the brake pedals? Mine does not have one.

Yep that is a foot throttle. That was the only 1500 that I ever had with a foot throttle.
