kick we were told not to use synthetic oil in those old trucks due to it would eat up the silicone on the intake gasket, glad yours is making it

Apparently that was an Old Wives Tale.

What is differnt in synthetic oil that would melt silicone?

gasoline will murder RTV but not oil.

workin,

As you know I have a '07 GMC Sierra. only 4,500 miles on it.

It has developed a light "clacking" sound already. Seems like it's coming from the engine compartment on the driver's side.

Think this is this the steering shaft problem?

is this a noise that you can hear while your sitting still?
the stearing shaft problem is one you feel mostly. the noise in a d-max is kind of a crackeling noise, lifter rattle noise, something like that?
if its something you hear at idle its a normal noise they all make when new, goes away at about 20k and is nothing to worry about. We were told by the d-max group that its oil passing through the gallesys under preessure, doesnt make sense to me but its normal and nothing to worry about.

All i know is what i was told by general motors engine group and thats what i have to go by. cant even begin to count the number of intake gaskets i have replaced due to synthetic oil or the amount of rear diff covers i have resealed due to synthetic oil. argue all you want, i have been there way to many times. There was an old tsb out about it even put out by the gm.
thats all i have to say about that topic, i did the repairs per gm and let them take on the engineering aspect of things.

1993 Chevy Extended Cab Z71
200,000 Miles
2 alternators
1 water pump
Has run Mobile 1 since the first oil change. I still have it and will let my son have it soon.

2005 Chevy extra cab (4 door) short bed Z71
1500 miles- Noise coming from dash, rattling, clicking sound. Three dashboard clusters later, noise is still there.
10,000 miles- Service 4X4 light comes on. Dealer replaces something that has grounded out. (Dis-comboobulator)?
15,000 miles- Steering wheel bump, dealer greased.
20,000 miles- Clunk when taking off from stop. Deal replaced output shaft yoke.
30,000 miles- Service 4X4 light again. Dealer replaces High/Low range sensor in transfer case. Guess what? Noise that I have been living with is now gone!! It was this sensor beating itself to death all a along. Just took 30,000 miles for them to figure it out.
41,000- Steering wheel bump is back.
Anybody have a road flare and a gallon of gas?

I will trade this in as soon as I am not upside down with the payments. Maybe a Titan or Tundra is in my future.

workin,

It is a sound almost like a bad ball joint. More prominant when the truck front end goes over a bump & turn at the same time.

clacking sound doesnt really fit the norm with the shaft problem, its usually quiet but something you feel more than hear. Its pretty hard for me to tell you what it is w/o hearing it. I suggest you make a few notes on when it does it and how to get it to make the noise. if you take it in and saw its making a clacking noise when i turn then they might not get it to make the noise and find the problem. I found over the years the people who do not give an accuate description of the noise and how the guy working on it can get it to make that noise usually dont get it fixed. You have to understand the chain of events, you tell the writter, he interprets what you say and then rewords your concern on the repair order then the tech has to try and figure out what the writter is saying and what the customers problem really is. I always told my customers to come talk to me or even take a ride with me driving so i can experience the problem first hand. This got so bad that the customers would drive to my bays and talk to me before they had a ticket written. With your truck Builder i would get to know a tech in your area at a dealer, talk to him and even slip him a 5 every once in awhile and you will be surprised at the kind of service you will get from him.
I will do a tsb search and see if there is anything out about it and let you know.

Could the front hub be loose? There is a nut, no cotter pin, holding it on and there have been reports of them backing off.

Jack up the front end and wiggle the tires and see what is loose.

If it's when you go straight, it's probably the slip joint from the driveshaft sticking then slamming forward. There was a service notice about that, the dealer should fix that for free if you're under warranty. Or you can drop the driveshaft and grease it up yourself.

jb

Guess I'll have to get my truck in to the shop soon because it does it going straight.

I'm not going to argue with your statement either. I don't believe it.

so their must be an explanation.....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................the synthetic oil must be different in Detroit than it is in FLA.

LOL..

dknarnd,

"There is an updated slip yoak for a problem like yours also, its nickel plated."

Workinallthetime is right on this. Mine (2000 Z71) did exactly what you are referring to. The yoke was replaced once under warranty and that fixed it for a while. Then when it started again they put the nickel plated one on and it's been fine for 75k miles.

For the record, no steering shaft problems at all. Fuel sending unit is acting up though. I'm going to try the fix suggested. Thanks.
