My 2001 2500HD DMax (for sale) has an on-board pump and rear air bags. I am thinking about putting them on this truck also...

i've got an 06 2500hd crew, 6.0/4.11. it's been a good truck for me so far. i'm right around 50k on it now, and while under warranty i had the intermediate steering shaft and a tie rod end replaced. sadly, soon after the warranty went out it developed a front main seal leak. it's very minor, and i haven't addressed it yet, though eventually i will have to. for now i am just monitoring it.

as far as towing goes, i've been content with it. i've owned enough 1/2 tons and no matter what they rate them at, i don't like them for towing anything past small recreational vehicles (snowmobiles/atv/small boat). i generally tow from small compact tractors to full size light duty trucks on my trailer, so usually 6,000-8,000lb combined. i once towed a ton dump on the trailer, so combined around 10,000lb and it was more weight behind me than i'd want to do on a regular basis with that truck and trailer setup.

for the motor's power i can't really complain considering the size and weight of the vehicle. i would consider the 6.0 a direct replacement for the 5.7 (350). it may look slightly better on paper, but from my driving experience it is pretty much the same. the 06 is virtually identical to the 00 2500 (classic) 5.7/4.11 i had previously, though i manage about 1.0mpg better economy with the 6.0 (i attribute a lot of that to the onboard dash gizmos that tell me how far i can go on a tank of fuel).

empty i can usually get right around 15mpg in the summer, but it has been my experience that in everyday driving you do best at 45-50mph. it will drop off a couple mpg at over 55mph. i drove it to florida once (pre-e10) and managed 15mpg round trip while doing a consistent 70+mph, but if you drive that fast and vary the speeds for local driving you're likely to get 10-12mpg.

I just picked up an 04 a couple of weeks ago. Loaded up crew with 115K. Paid close to that. Probably a little high on the one I got but it was in great shape and what I needed. I don't get too worked up on having to get the deal of the century on everything I purchase though. Great trucks for what they're intended for. The steering shaft can be replaced with a different design now, but it's really only a noise nusiance. Likes the gas.

I have a 2004 hd 2500 6.0 that I bought new in 04. Like someone said I have replaced dash cluster, very easy. Front wheel bearing, fan motor relay ( only worked on high and the damper control for hot/cold air. All these items went out in the last year, I just turned 100k. It's been a great truck. I had trans flushed at 28k and then did it myself by seeing it done from this site. Dexcool at 50k along with front, rear and transfer case fluids. From some others I've heard to only put synthetic in front diff. I just had plugs and wires put on to. Never had any leaks anywhere. 12-13 is about right. I do tend to drive a little faster than most 70-80 mph on my 28 mile commute to work. If you go a little slower I'm sure your mileage will increase. Some coworkers have 02 1/2 ton z71's. Both are starting to rust a little bit on the cab corners. Mine are perfect so I don't know if they had more metal protection on the later years or better design.

I owe a 2005 2500HD crew cab short bed with the 6.0L. Gas mileage never got more than 13.5 mpg. It is a smart truck I just put the keys in it and it goes to the dealership all by itself. UAW problems, misaligned front end, transmission leak gasket not installed correctly, rear window not installed correct, only primed in a number of places and under carriage rusting not being painted. The cluster had to be reprogrammed and the CD had to be reprogrammed. When you turn the steering wheel it makes a noise no one can find that one. Granted it is a HD, but it does bounce around on the road. 55 in the front and 68 in the rear.

It is not like a car in that the back does not follow the front end, so swing a little wider then turning into a gas station or a parking spot.

I have been towing for 25 years now seriously. I average 10,000 miles a year and have never been a fan of air bags. Some guys swear buy them but to me its just a band aid for too small of a truck. If you need air bags you need the next size bigger truck. SRW 1 tons are my favorite. Buy them right and you can support 4,000# of pin weight like my F-350 SRW.

I have a 2001 HD w/6.0, crew cab, short box, bought with around 35,000. Had to put new left front hub on a few years ago, nut worked loose. Just put new water pump, hoses & belts on at 164,000. Otherwise, only minor problems!

As far as towing, I've towed as much as 12,000+ with plenty of power (JD 720D w/weights) & second trailer w/4-bottom 3-pt plow)! Regularly tow two trailers to shows, probably more like 6-7,000# most of the time now.

Gas mileage, not the best, probably around 12-13 most of the time! ~~ grnspot110

That will be fine. My one and only experience with the 6.0 did not turn out good. Granted I had it overloaded by about 6,000# but we tried to pull a 15,000# plus boat from the lake and it would not do it even in 4 low. Had to hook a Suburban and a F-150 to the 2500 to get it out. This was a boat we had launched numerous times with diesel trucks and Ford V-10's in 4 wheel high with no issues.

Pulling large boats from a full stop on a 30deg plus incline even within tow rating will tax any truck.

It is what it is, just like any 3/4 ton truck with a small gas engine no matter what brand.

Chris

An aftermarket tune on the 6.0L helps alot, the torque management ( or whatever the call it) is very conservative when trying to get a load rolling. I felt the 6.0L 2500 suburban was a pig compared to my 5.3L work truck until I put a tune on it. Although I never tried pulling anything in the 15000 lb range with it either.

I should say that when the load was rolling you could feel the extra power, etc. without the tune.

What's wrong with keeping the truck level so the steering is at optimum position?
